okies, so i'm 5'0", pre-op i weighed 254 (11-27-06). tomorrow will be exactly 13 months since i had my surgery and as of TODAY i've lost 145 pounds. yup, you've got it folks, i weighed 109 as of first thing this morning! i am no longer TRYING to lose weight, i eat everything under the sun pretty much (chocolate, chips and candy included!!! but i always make sure i get in what i "need" in addition to these little "extra treats".) and i don't exercise at all any more (i'm skeered to now! i'm afraid that'll make me lose EVEN MORE!) and yet i'm still losing weight! what tha crap's going on here??? so my nutritionist told me to keep doing what i'm doing and keep in touch with him but that he's not going to be concerned until i get underweight. (not "if" i get underweight but rather, "until"!) because i'm so short i would have to be 95 pounds to be "underweight" (96 is the very lowest i could be and still have a "healthy" bmi) BUT, that's only 14 pounds away! and i'm still losing anywhere from 6-9 pounds a month!! yes, the weightloss HAS slowed down significantly (i'm no longer losing 11-17 pounds/month) BUT it's still coming off pretty fast for someone who eats as much junk as i do. so my question to you guys is this, "NOW WHAT??????"

i am going through this right now. i am 5'2", was 238 on surgery day, and now weigh 114. my goal was 125 - 130. my bmi is still in the normal range, but i am still losing. i spoke with a nutritionist, and told her i know that i need to eat more, but i feel like i eat all the time as it is. she said to add more good carbs, and eat 6-7 smaller meals through the day. i am okay with where my weight is right now, i just don't want to get any smaller... it's too hard to find clothes that fit now as it is! i had to shop in the childrens section for a new winter coat! with the advice from the nut. i have been stable at 114 for a week and a half. good luck getting this under control!

thank you! it's really weird, isn't it? you never think that "this" could happen. thankfully, i'm also STILL within a "normal" bmi range but the continued loss really freaks me out. (don't get me wrong, i LOVE being teeny tiny ~ even though **I** don't really see it myself. i just don't want to end up looking all skeletal and everything.)

i completely agree. i did this to be healthy... too small is just as bad as too big. do you get a lot of crap from people telling you that you are too small, it's time to stop now, etc? drives me crazy...

I would recommend adding good carbs into your diet and not eating the junk.  The junk does add calories, but it adds nothing else, and it's bad for you in other ways.  You can add calories to your diet to try to stop the lost without using junk food to do it.  AND,  since you're only 13 months out, and still within that window called the "honeymoon" phase, which can last for many until 18 months, it would not be good to have not broken that junk food addiction should the weight loss suddenly stop, your body adjusts to the surgery and you start gaining weight - and more than just a little, because of the junk food.  Read through some of the posts here and see how many post-ops struggle with weight re-gain because of old food habits creeping back in. I certainly do understand what you're struggling with and *why* you're trying the junk food at this point; but honestly, you should be developing healthy eating habits, get rid of the junk and adding in healthy carbs and more calories with healthy food choices.   I didn't read every response, what is your exercise schedule like?  The more you exercise, or the more strenuous the exercise, the more calories you need.  If you're really working out like crazy, switch-up your work-out to something less intense 2-3 days per week, so use up less calories.  If you're not exercising, you still need to, even if it will burn calories, because you need if for overall muscle development, cardiac health, etc.... Are you tracking your food intake?  I use the fitday.com program that I bought, but they have it online for free.  There's a few other online places too to track food.  See what you're getting in.  You'd be surprised at how just a little bit of food can add up in calories.

thank you sooo much for responding!!! as of right now i'm not exercising at all. i had been exercising like CRAZY up until i had my gall bladder removed and an internal hernia repaired back in may and i just haven't been back since. i was afraid to go back because i was afraid i would be burning more calories and lose even more weight. my nut had suggested adding in some weight training but i was scared to even do that because i know that the more muscle you have, the faster you burn calories even being completely sedentary. and yeah, i track my food on the free fitday.com site as well. i'm extremely neurotic about it, lols, and about making sure that i hit all my "goals" and that everything balances. my nut said to aim for a 50/25/25 balance and i usually hit that. (50% protein, 25% fat, 25% carbs) what "good carbs" would you suggest? and what exercise would you suggest? i just went out on my lunch break and got a new pair of exercise pants (had to get them from the children's section...) and i'm planning on going to the ymca after work today. what kind of plan should i ask them to help me come up with? i felt like all along i had such a good handle on this whole thing but now it's like i just don't even know what i'm doing anymore. i **thought** i was doing everything right but maybe i've been doing it too well? idk... i even confessed to my nut at my one year check-up that i've been having sodas because i've been hoping to stretch my pouch out so that i'd be able to eat more at a time instead of having to eat constantly. and i told him that i've also been drinking with my meals in hopes of washing everything out of my pouch sooner so that i'll be able to eat again sooner in order to get everything that i NEED into me each day. it's ridiculous! i am seriously stuffing my face non-stop! and days like this past weekend where things are crazy and i forget to eat until noon or later? i lose 2-3 pounds in a single day! please, any advice that you can offer is very much appreciated at this point!

I would do walking and I would do some light weight training or resistance exercise.  You need to think about the big, overall and long-term and that should include exercise.  Honestly, I really think what is most likely happening with you (and I'm not a doctor, so not medical advice or anything - just from long-term observations in my 7.5 years of being in the WLS community, with 3 years of pre-op research time and then my 3.5 years as a post-op) is that your body is losing and it will eventually stop.  You may get to a low point that you do not want to remain - but you will bounce back up.  It's not at all uncommon for post-ops to lose to an all-time low weight and then bounce back up 5-10% and then settle there.  My surgeon explained this as the body settling on a weight it wants to naturally be. Good carbs:  salads, whole grains, vegetables and some fruits too.  Now, every one is different - I can tolerate a bit of fruit and some fruit juices NOW, but immediately post-op I could not, and I still do not eat a lot of fruit and juice to this day.  Some folks don't tolerate even the natural sugars in fruit/juices well.  So do what your body can handle.  The good carbs also mean fiber - and we need that!!!  Sodas and pouch stretching:  I've heard conflicting theories on whether we can or can't stretch our pouch.  My surgeon said the way they do the pouch - you can not stretch it, and certainly not by drinking some soda.  That said, there's no good nutritional value in soda, not even diet soda.  It's hard enough to get our water in,  and our protein shakes, so I don't see how/when you'd find the time to drink much else, certainly not something without any nutritional value at all.    If you want to get in some extra calories, try making a protein smoothie with some fruit or something, maybe some yogurt or something like that.  You have to think about what you're eating and why.  Is this food going to help me or harm me.  Especially since we can only hold a small amount of food at a time, we need to get in a minimum amount of protein per day, at least 64 ounces of water, plus some of the good carbs too for the fiber and the nutrients they provide - not to mention the supplements we need.  It's the mindless eating of whatever you can grab that got most people obese in the first place:  it takes effort to stop that habit.
