?? about low sugar
I read post here about ppl have low blood sugars. 2 times in the last 2 days I've felt really shakey, kinda fuzzy brained. Is this slow blood sugar?hypoglosemic? SP) I'm 2 yrs post-op & this is something new to me. I ate protein right away & the fellings went away after a short time. Just a concern as I said this is new to me & not sure if it's something to worry about. I'm not a worrier so I tend to let things get away from me & then I realize it's something to be concered about.
Probably. Starts around 2 yrs out, normally. Minding your own business when suddenly legs go weak or hands start to tingle and then in moments, sweat, confusion, have to sit down. Eating protein helps a little, fastest bet is peanut butter on bread or crackers (carb + fat + protein).
I think after all this time, I've finally figured out that white things do it to me. potato, white bread mostly. It tends to hit about 1.5 hrs after I've eaten maybe a burger or fries (I'm immune to the fats). As a result, what was once a staple (Happy Cheese with a diet, please) is not "safe" for me now.
Stylz has done a huge amouint of research on this and has now realized how deadly dangerous this can be. In each car and in my purse are the lil PB crackers. How do they live in my purse? Hard glasses case. I am never without a pkg of them near by. In case.

I believe she posted all her links on another post tonight. Run thru the last 6-8 hours and see if you see one on hypoglycemia.
For me, avoiding white things is doing the trick. No bread or potatoes, or I guess I should say, very eensy portions.
I already do whey protein + water 6+ times per day and what I eat is usually half a protein bar (I'm totally in love with them, so this is not a sacrifice!)
This isn't something you can have dx by labs, BTW. It happens fast and hard, and you'll not be in a lab when it does. *I* would not take a GTT, no way, no how, unless they had emergency personnel standing by. I KNOW I would have an episode then and who would revive me? No thanks! It's not like I can't tell what's happening, so what would a GTT prove?

GTT? I'm sorry. this looks familiar but I'm not Positive what it is. Glucose Tolerance Test? That's where they have you fast overnight, then give you sugar and then test your blood every half hour or so? I did that prior to surgery but I'd have to decline now for sure!
I had a fasting blood test a couple of weeks ago and hated doing that and it wasn't the GTT either.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

reactive hypoglycemia happens as she says around 2 years out, it hit me around a year and a half out. to prevent it, you should cut down on white foods (white bread, rice, pasta, crackers, pretzels, shredded wheat, high sugar foods, etc). eating every 3 hours will also help, your goal is to keep your blood sugar level and by eating every 3 hours (even if its an ounce of cheese, a tbsp of peanut butter, a couple shrimp, slice of deli meat, some greek yogurt, cottage cheese, anything with protein) will help your blood sugar stabolize. when you get the symptoms you do try eating protein, it helps bring your blood sugar up.
I'm like vitalady when it comes to white startches, I stay away. white potatoes really do me in no matter how small the amount (mashed, fried, roasted, any way) even if i eat it with protein.
try sticking to complex carbohydrates, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, brown rice, wheat pasta, whole wheat crackers, any type of whole grains if you decide to eat carbs
good luck
