HELP!! Weight going wrong direction!!!

A Q.
on 1/11/08 5:54 am - Houston, TX

Surgery 12/8/06 at 233.6 pounds; goal to lose 130 pounds.

13 months post op and eating about 3-4 times a day. Started working out on January 5—running 45 mins on the treadmill, January 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.  My weight is increasing—Jan 1 (137.2), Jan 2 (137.6), Jan 3 (137.6), Jan 4 (137.8), Jan 5 (136.8), Jan 6 (137.6), Jan 7 (137.8), Jan 8 (138.4), Jan 9 (138.6), Jan 10 (138.8), TODAY (139).

I am working out really hard, I am thinking that there are 4 possible reasons

  1. I am not eating enough to offset the workouts
  2. Water retention—due to the workouts and/or sodium
  3. I am gaining weight for any number of reasons, my stomach is broken!
  4. I messed up!! And broke my stomach!

I cannot fail at this, I think I am doing the right things. Can anyone lend some assistance??  I swear if I show weight of 140 tomorrow, I am gonna freak out!! But, I am going to workout tonight too. And I am adding a protein shake at night to try to boost up my good calories.

Finally, I weigh DAILY and track daily and I have never, in the past year, experienced this large amount of fluctuation.

Please help!

Angela

Hey Angela! Wow, that does sound frustrating. I can so relate.  The same thing was happening to me and then I started lifting weights, doing cardio really hard using intrival training only twice a week. My body fat is really going down. I haven't weighed yet but my clothes are hanging different. If I were in your position I would: 1) make sure you are getting your lean dense proteins as well as slow burning complex carbs. 2) Drink a ton of water throughout the day. 3) Lift some weights to build some more muscle so you can be a fat burning machine. Good luck my friend! Hang in there and put your scale in the back of your car for a few days or you'll go batty!

Angela, muscle weighs more than fat.  It may just be a case of gaining muscle mass.  Have to taken your measurements?  Are you eating like you are suppose to?  Are you taking your supplements?  Are you getting your protein?  Are you getting your fluids?  I failed to look and see what surgery you had, but as a RNY, all of these things play an important part in weight loss and maintenence.  Hazel

Just so you know, muscle doesn't weigh more then fat does! One Pound of muscle is equal ot one pound of fat, muscle is just way more dense so it take up less room in your body. Fat kind of spreads out (dont' we know that) and takes up more body mass then muscle does. Be Well, ANDI

Actually, I didn't think I had to go to the extreme of total explanation.  I pound is a pound is a pound.  But a cup of fat weighs far less than a cup of muscle.  Just like a pound of iron occupys less space than a pound of feathers.  Next time I will do a complete explanation.  Hazel

HI Angela! I think that your #'s 1 and 2 are on the right track and you've received some really good advice already. Try not to stress about the scale too much~I know that's easier said than done, but you know you're doing all the good things you should be doing so things will be all good!!! I have found with my rigorous workout schedule that I need WAY more calories daily than most people post that they eat and I can still lose a few pounds here and there pretty easily even at 3yrs post op. You haven't broken anything, so hang in there!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your help and advice!  I tracked my eating on fitday.com, ate about 1400 calories yesterday, worked out last night, drank plenty of water.  I actually changed the battery on my scale and when I weighed this morning, I was at 137 so my scare is over (for now). Thanks for all of your well wishes and advice.  I did not plan to stop workouts or doing the right things that I know I have been doing. Angela
