Regret Surgery

I had my by-pass done 10-3-06 and it was successful, I have not had any problems.  Although I constantly have low blood sugar and the aweful feeling that goes with it.  When I have a low blood sugar attack I cannot pull out of it for a  good thirty to forty minutes.  It's the worst feeling.  My blood work if fine and I am eating plenty of protein.  My doctor is perplexed.  For that reason alone I almost regret having the surgery.  This happens to me at least four times a week and it is exhausting when it does happen.  Any suggestions or words of wisdom??

I have problems with hypoglycemia too and, you're right, it feels pretty crappy.  My episodes come one when:

1) I over eat carbs

2) I eat high sugar content foods

3) I don't eat often enough.

I can avoid them by eating meals that contain low refined carbs and good protein and by eating several small meals per day rather than 3 big ones.  I eat every 3 hours or so.  Have you tried any of these strategies?  They might help.  Good luck!

My reply was going to be very similar to Beatrice on what you can do to help keep your sugar in check.  It's become a somewhat common situation for RNY patients at 3+ years (some sooner) to experience symptoms of reactive gylcemia....... Good luck!

i had my rny 4/12/05 and started experiencing the same thing around 1.5 yrs out.....i agree with the above posts for ways to fix it but i found that if i eat those "good carbs" i put weight on so i just try to eat something every couple hours and keep small pieces of candy in my purse just in case i forget to eat and it runs low.....on a side note...i just had tt on 12-20-07 and when they took my blood sugar for pre op tests and the day of the surgery it was like 57 and then very low 80's and they asked me if i felt ok and i said yeah i was just hungry both times.....i usually start my day with some type of protein and a carb and we cant forget about my diet pepsi or vanilla cappachino......and just go from there....but i have noticed that my body tells me i'm hungry every few hours..so i just listen to it now and eat so i dont end up with low blood sugar and sick as a dog.....good luck too you..... 04/12/05-250lbs.............1/15/08-145lbs.......only 15 lbs from goal!

I think I have found a solution, although it is defeats the purpose of WLS. Eat often and gain weight. The bigger I get, the less it happens. It started happening alot when I was at goal weight of 128-130. it happened less the more weight I gained and it doesn't happen anymore (knock on wood) since I weigh 163-166 now. I think it is because the pancreas is used to producing so much insulin for the overweight sized body.

I eat every two or three hours but haven't succumed to the carbs yet. I eat good carbs if any at all. I eat low cal, low fat stuff. it doesn't take very much food each time I eat but I do have ot eat often. Actually, if you put everything I eat all day long together it's about two meals before WLS. I'm doing about 1600 calories a day but I'm very busy. I can not eat white carbs at all. No pasta, no white bread, no rice. slight amounts of potatoes. I can eat multi grain brown rice crackers but I keep it to a 1/4 serving size. As I said, I don't eat much but I do eat often. It seems to help. I haven't had an "episode" in a couple of weeks.  Try reading the book Hypoglycemia for Dummies. It's helped me.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!
