x-post - "I Can Make You Thin" on TNT last night

Watched it because my husband was interested.  He's overweight but not big enough for WLS.  He wanted my opinion.  I was expecting it to be garbage but was VERY pleasantly surprised!  Sounds a LOT like how we (should) live!  In ( )'s are my docs rules

4 Rules from last night...

1. Eat when you're hungry  (eat 6 times a day)

2. Eat what you want, not what you think you 'should'  (don't eat 'low-fat' diet food - eat high quality, ie filet minion - my favorite!)

3. Eat consciously and slowly!!  Chew each piece 20 times!!  (No translation needed!)

4. Stop eating when you THINK you might be full.  You can eat again if you're hungry in 10 minutes.  (again, no translation needed.)

Quite frankly, I think I needed the reminder with the last 2.  Since I'm approaching 2 years out I've been less conscious WHILE I'm eating and I've been getting over-full more often.

My husband took the advice while eating dinner (we were eating really late - the show was on at 9 and we were just starting dinner) and for once he didn't finish what was on his plate and refill!  And I didn't finish what was on my (salad) plate either.

Even though I don't have to chew 20 times to digest anymore - it's still a good idea.  That's something to remember!

Hi Carolyn, I watched this too and was very intrigued as to what Paul McKenna's message is.  His rules are actually VERY VERY good and are basic.  No phantom miracles here or "quick fixes".    My husband was trying so hard not to watch it (he really doesn't like any shows about weight loss or anything) but he ended up on the floor in front of the TV. hahah  He said he also got a good bit of information out of it.  (he has put on a lot of weight and is very defensive if I mention eating better or exercising.) I did learn some things last night from the show and will be putting some of those things into practice.  I think the idea of closing your eyes while eating is a great one, especially for us who tend to graze during the day.   This truly is one way to really go back to re-enforcing if we are satisfied and don't need another bite.   I am really really looking forward to next week's episode.  Who else watched, what did you think?? ~Shannon

I watched it this morning and think it was great. I just sat down and watched it again with my hubby this time. He also plans to put his rules to work. I am going to try eating with my eyes closed. I can't wait until next week!

I'm a bit afraid of the eyes closed thing since I get food all over myself with my eyes open!

I agree that the basics mentioned in the above posts are good things.  We all should take heart and set our goals to follow the plan.  Pre or post op, every bit of discipline helps.  On the flip side, if it were so simple and he really could make us thin, why is bariatric surgery necessary?  My fear is that people will be convinced that listening to snake oil sales pitches are the CURE for obesity.  More and more major insurance companies are toying around with the idea of excluding bariatric surgery as a covered benefit.  Even now, when most major carriers do cover bariatrics, how many of us know someone whose employer didn't purchase bariatric surgery coverage?  If mainstream society is convinced that the can "MAKE YOU THIN", the discrimination against obesity will continue.  Obesity is a disease.  It is multifactoral and has devastating consequences if left untreated.  I am a Bariatric Surgery Program Director and host physician seminars twice a week.  EVERY seminar has persons in need of treatment who have good jobs with crappy insurance.  Our local city, county and school districts have all excluded coverage for weight loss surgery.  It's a sad commentary that a local bank has developed a loan program specifically for the Lap-band. OK, podium folded and stowed.  Sorry for the tirade. Cindy

I caught the end of that show. It made a lot of sense. He makes it sound so easy ...

Well, we ALL know it's NEVER as easy as they make it sound!
