My surgery is sched for april 17th, and i am so heavy and out of shape it hurts to move. I know I have to in order for my dr to not lose total faith in me and just say "LOOKS LIKE YOURE DEAD ALREADY" and just write me off. I have arthritis in my spine so walking is really painful, but I need to get off my butt and do it anyway.  Any ideas peeps???

I know it may be hard to do, but if you can get to a swimming pool, that will be less stress on your spine and will get your whole body moving. Once you have lost some weight you will really notice a difference and you are taking a good path towards a healthy life. Hoep it all goes well on April 17th....

congrats on your upcoming surgery. something u can do now is what is called chair exercises. since u have internet access go google that and i know u will find some strecthing and moving that can be done right from your little old chair by the computer. AARP for sure has some exercises on their site. good luck, jacki

I have been there. I used to dread getting out of bed in the morning because I knew my legs and hips would be trying to give out under my weight, and it hurt so bad. I'm no expert, but I would suggest doing some sitting exercises, maybe getting a couple of food cans for weights, and just do some military presses (straight up and down), some bicep curls, and things like that. Even with no weights, it would help get you started. If it's not too hard on your back, maybe get on your side and do some of those leg lifts. I'm so proud of you for taking this step. I know it's hard. Before my RNY, I could tell a lot of people didn't think I'd be successful, sort of like "here she goes again." Do NOT let people discourage you. It's a tough road, but it will be so worth it. I'm looking forward to watching you.

Mind Set!!!!!!   More like it!!!! First off.... you are not a fat lazy pre-op, Darling!  You are about to make a positive change to improve your health, which makes you are very smart lady.   As for exercise, originally I just would do some leg lifts and stretches in bed...then some of the same with my arms.  I graduated to walking a bit.  Obviously, Keep off the floor!!! I pulled-out my shoulder trying to get back up...  BTW:  I still have to re-direct negative self-messages.  Probably a lot of  Grads do this also.  We are still taking baby steps after years of being MO.  You are in good company!  Bet your Dr. is so proud of you too. April 17!!!!!   Keep us posted!   Ro

Thanks for the encouragement! I hadnt thought about doing my exersizes in a chair or doing streches. I just had this idea that I had to get up and go to the local gym and deal with the stares and snickers, not to mention the physical pain. I have been seeing a councelor for a year now to work on my self esteem and self-image. This weight loss surgery has developed out of seeing her and dealing with my baggage, mental baggage that is. So im dealing with physical baggage now too.   Any ideas about how to get thru the clear liquids phase? I start that next week.

I was in a lot of pain and found it near impossible to exercise myself (pre-op)I did what i could in water...I honestly don't know how any of you all are supposed to be able to do these liquid diets for months at a time....I guess my surgeon is one that just doesn't have a lot of requirements. He had a TON of tests and personal stuff he makes us all do...Like take a nutrition course! I loved that even though I had to pay for it out of pocket.  But the clear liquid phase? :::Whew::: I really don't know how you get through that...I Only had to fast on clear liquids for two days pre op...and that was as far as liquids went...and I was so excited I just did it and didn't even think of the hunger or anything... I wish you much luck with it all and hopefully much of your pain and "laziness" (you are not lazy... you silly!) will be over and a thing of the past...Just do your best and do what you can...I think your doc will be happy if you just lose some weight to make surgery easier on you both!  Anita

I remember using a straw helped me. Also, put a lot of water bottles & such in the freezer so that ice forms for a colder drink. Also, you can use flavor 2 go packets. My favorite is honey-lemon green tea 0 sugar 0 calories. Good luck & take care !

Keeping your mobility is so important.  So glad that you are trying to find a good fit for your current exercise plan.  Once your weight reduces, you'll probably really enjoy getting-out and doing more. As for mental baggage...that takes time...and effort... and patience... but working on it is the key! I didn't have a clear liquid phase pre-op.  I'd just follow the Dr's info.  Call the office with questions.  Bariatric staff are very helpful; they know that this is a big step for you.  I found that after surgery my tastebuds were "shot".  Nothing tasted good for a while.  I only bought a small amount of "liquids" because I had heard from others that they had spent $$$$ and didn't like the taste of things after WLS.  I froze a batch of my favorite chicken broth, using an ice cube tray, which helped. Have a good weekend!!!   Ro

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. I would only suggest doing light exercise, non weight bearing, as previous posters stated. As the weight starts coming off you feel better and have less pain and be able to start walking or another exercise that you find you can do comfortably. AS for the liquid diet, have plenty of sugar free popcylces and chicken or beef broth to sip on along with water or crystal lite type sugar free beverages. ALso  sugar free jello counts as a liquid.

 Wishing you all the best.
