Jen... THROW AWAY the ferrous sulfate...You cannot absorb Iron salts. I was in your shoes just over 3 months ago. You have a different cause of anemia than I did. Your anemia is being caused by your B-12 deficiency (pernicious anemia) I did a TON of research on my own and decided to try to find the best way to avoid infusions and transfusions. But I have Iron deficiency anemia which is different...I was able to get my red blood cells back and got my ferritin from 5 up to 16 in two months. My B-12 was not the cause of my anemia...YOU will more than likely end up with B-12 injections right away...but the oral to take is Carbonyl iron. It is non toxic and gentle/tender on your body. (Unlike ferrous sulfate which has terrible side effects and is not absorbed anyway) I chew 325 mg of chewable Tender Iron that I get from Vitalady.com. (13 tablets) which I chew along with Vit C as ascorbic acid. I also take 2 mg copper capsule and dry Vit A capsule. (Both aid in iron absorption) I am also Vit A deficient so taking Vit A was an added bonus to helping with non-heme iron absorption. I'm not a doctor...or a nurse...or any type of medical practitioner. I'm just a WLS person whose doctor didn't know how to treat me and so I took my health in my own hands and did research to help myself. Almost every person I spoke to who had anemia told me that I could not raise my iron levels with oral iron only....I proved them wrong. There are others too who have found that carbonyl iron (Tender Iron) is working for them too. With your ferritin being as low as it is and your B-12 as well...I honestly don't see how you can avoid infusions..You are beyond dangerously low, sweetie. Infusions will definitely help you feel better over time and Tender Iron should be what you take for supps thereafter in my humble experience and opinion. I wrote your post 3 months ago...almost word for word....So I know what you are going thru. Who knew? Not me, that's for sure. I kick everyone in the butt about vits now that I have become deficient in nearly all of my vitamins because like you, I was not religious in taking them all. I did take my B Vits...and I'm not deficient there! So that alone proved to my stubborn self that I really did this myself. I was determined to fix it. So far so good. Still working on raising my iron much higher and some of my vit levels too. I wish you much luck... Please don't take the ferrous sulfate...You don't have to suffer the horrible side effects...You can order Tender Iron here http://www.vitalady.com/ Bariatric Advantage is also Carbonyl Iron....however you will pay 6 times the price for it over Vitalady's Tender Iron at only $16. Hugs
I go thru 400 tablets of Tender Iron a month! LOL (been thru 3 bottles now!) It's working with no side effects so I'm not complaining. I totally escaped a blood transfusion for my blood cell production and iron infusions...I feel soooooo lucky that I'm not changing a thing just yet. LOL Know what I mean? But I'm glad to know I have an alternative if I forget to order or run out by accident and forget my iron on a road trip or something....Good to know that I can find it elsewhere! I've seen other brands of Tender Iron but they are not chewable. Is the one you get from Target a chewable? I prefer to chew most of my vitamins...(I have strong gag reflexes since surgery) I'm getting better at swallowing yucky tasting B Complex and smaller capsules....but I still like the idea of chewing for absorption purposes also. I just feel that absorption is far more successful when it can start digestion right in the mouth with saliva enzymes. Many times too, some vitamins will irritate and burn the heck outta my pouch when it sits there in pill form and then it repeats on me for an hour or longer... I looked at the price for the BA iron...HOLY MOLY! It would cost over $100 a month for me to buy that stuff right now while I am working on bringing my iron up...Incredible! Thanks for the info!
