How do you feel about fruit?

I am curious what you all think about fruit? I have always loved fruit and actually eat quite a lot in a day...until i decided to start tracking everything in FitDay and realized just how much carbs are in all this fruit I eat. I kept thinking, "Fruit cant be bad, right?" So...is it? Is eating all this fruit for snacks derailing me and keeping me from my goals? I get in enough protein each day, but I do eat a lot of fruit, which makes my carb number climb. Thoughts on fruit anyone?

I think fruit is good - keep in mind that a serving of fruit for us post-WLSers isnt that much - typically around 1/2-1 cup depending on the fruit... i.e. if I get a large banana I eat 1/2 as a serving, 1/2 an apple, 1/2 a cup of grapes etc. I eat 1400-1800 calories a day and am to have 2-3 servings of fruit so thats really not that much. You want to stick to mainly low glycemic index fruits because of the sugar, eat the middle glycemic index now and then and the high only on occasion. Personally I dont feel the fruit carbs are going to keep you from any goals - the majority of your carbs should be from fruits, veggies, dairy and lastly starch/carb... I personally get more concerned with sugar than the carbs.

Many are going to disagree with me on this.  I don't count fruit and vegetables and eat them all day long, as much as I want when I want.  The caveat is that I exercise religiously and watch everything else.  I do not eat breads, rice, pasta's i.e., wasted carbs.

Yeah, they do make your carbs climb but I have to consider them as good carbs. they aren't like eating a piece of white bread...so I do eat fruit.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Most fruits have the RIGHT kinda carbs...the ones with soluable fiber! And many fruits even have a little protein too! You can basically subtract the fiber grams from the carbs in fruits.  Plus they are LOADED with vits and minerals, antioxidants and are basically a low calorie food.   I eat a lot of fruit daily...I wouldn't even dream of cutting back on fruit....I do count the carbs in fruit because I journal my food and like to see where I am.... but I TOTALLY ignore a high carb day if it was because of eating fruit!  I feel totally guilt free... I feel more guilty drinking an extra protein drink or eating a protein bar covered in chocolate and made from things that didn't exactly grown a tree or come directly from an animal....and is filled with all kinds of fake stuff....to be quite honest...But I do both anyway...LOL Watermelon is the only fruit I eat in moderation and only occasionally because it is soooo high in natual sugar and will make me dump ...So that is usually a warning that even though it's mostly water...It's got a ton of sugar...Cherries kill me too...so I watch them...And even though bananas are high in sugar, I just buy the smaller ones...I'd eat one daily if they didn't go bad so fast...They don't bug me at all...I jus****ch my grains on days I have high sugar fruits...It evens things out...But once in a while I like to shake up the carbs and give my metabolism a shock!  I don't gain unless I forget to stop shaking things up!  LOL That happens too!   That's just my opinion...

I am so glad to hear all of this. I know fruit and veggies are good for me, but I get so hung up in the numbers overall. I eat mostly local or organic food, so fruits and veggies are high in my diet. I just am always freaked out by a large carb number. :P

subtract the fiber from the total carbs - this gives you the net carbs you should worry about.  Because fruit is so high in fiber it's low in "bad" carbs.  I am unable to eat a lot of fruit because it makes me dump.  This morning I had 1/3 of a medium banana (not even 2" worth) and I dumped.  More than 3 strawberries = the same thing.  I can eat 10 red grapes and about 1/2 cup of cantaloupe without dumping.  Apples and oranges I have yet to find an amount I can tolerate.

I love fruit, and eat lots of it some days.  Luckily, I have never dumped from fruit, it would make me soooo sad if I couldn't have it.  Because I am not journaling my foods, the carb numbers don't freak me out with them.  I rarely eat more than 1/2 a banana at a time, and then only rarely.  But the fruits that are in season, stand back out of my way.  I ate about a pound of fresh cherries the other day.  Fresh berries of any kind are a favorite snack.  I keep dried apples in the house all the time.  I have found them without anything on them at all, no sugars, no chemicals.  I eat small amounts of dried apple with a little cheddar cheese and almonds at midday.  Yum. Same thoughts of fresh veggies.  I keep grape tomatoes on my counter at all times.  If I feel I need to put something in my mouth, pop, goes a tomato.  Fresh peppers washed and cut into strips in the frig. I don't worry about what I consider the good, healthy stuff.  Now anything white is a different matter, processed, etc.  I may eat it, but very minimally, and always be aware that it's going in my mouth.
