Just read on Mayo clinic web site that these things could affect absorption on levothyroxine.

soy products

high fiber diet

iron supplements

Questran

aluminum hydroxine (found in antacids)

and calcium supplements

It  did not say what to do about this,

Anyone have any other info????

Need to talk with my doctor since I have been using 4 out of the 6 things on this list. We may have to space out when we take thyroid medicine and not take it within a period of time when  we take any of these items, also may have to limit soy intake??

Yes.  I have known these things for a while now because I research everything!

I take my Synthroid first thing in the morning at least 45 minutes before my coffee (caffeine is another culprit that can affect absorption of thyroid medication).

I also keep it on my nightstand in case I wake up in the middle of the night and I take it then so I'm for certain hours away from anything that can affect absorption.  I also completely avoid soy products because of the affects on hormones in the body.

I have a lot of information on Hypothyroidism on my profile though I don't believe I included the necessity of spacing certain compounds with thyroid medication.

I hope this helps.

I have two sides to my brain - a right side and a left side.  The trouble is sometimes there is nothing left in the right side and nothing right in the left side.

Vanessa,
Great idea to keep it on nite stand....I have been taking it first thing in morning with zantac and coffee, my calcium and D3 shortly after...i sure hope its not been money down the drain. I am having a Dexascan in the morning to see if my increased cal and D3 made a difference. So glad I ventured to the board this evening. I swear I learn something new every single day of my life. Thanks

Why oh why are you drinking coffee if you are taking zantac? If your pouch is irritated and you are taking zantac, caffiene should be avoided along with smoking, peppers, and alcohol. Sorry, but I see this a lot and do not understand how one can do that to their pouch.

Diona  FYI... I don't take zantac for stomach irritation I take it as a urticaria (Histamine) with certrizine (also histamine) 3 times a day to keep hives from developing. It's a chronic idiopathic condition I have had for many years. I do dont have ulcer or acid stomach problems. This is a protocol perscribed by a specialist to reduce chances of hives which can last numerous years if not treated properly. It is also part of autoimmune disorder caused by Hashimoto thryroid condiiton.
Also I dirink one half cup of coffee with cream and do not have issue with this.I did take Vanessa's advice, woke at 3:30 and took my thryroid med about 4 this morning.
