Your thoughts ... worried about Vitamin Deficiency problems (post RNY?)

It is good to hear that you have a group of friends that are 3+ years out and no deficiency issues.  I have been surprised at how little information there is for people that are 15+ years out of surgery.

I am 5 years out and i just started having some problems. Let me say: I WOULD have the surgery again in a heartbeat. the small problems i am having are nothing compared to what i might have been facing at 300 plus pounds or more by now.
I have also let me two daughters have it also. Yes i was the dog of the town for a while.
Some people have some good advice and they know nothing about gastric pypass.
Just let it go in one ear and out the other.
You must make your decision based on what you need. I did have some complications and yes there is that chance.
Are you over 100  pounds overweight? If so i would strongly consider it.
It is so hard to loose100 plus pounds and keep it off on your own. we have all been there 100 times in our lives..
Good luck with your decision what ever it might be. If i can answere any questions i will.
I have been a poster child for RNY . Anyone looks at me and watches me closely around the town. they secretly hope i gain it all back.

Hi Debbie ... I am about 80 lbs overweight right now (I was 100+ when I got the band but have been able to keep about 20 off).

I agree it is hard to keep the weight off ... congrats on your success.

Have they been able to determine why you are having problems at this point?  Is there anything you would do differently if you were starting now?

I'll be 4 years post-op in February.  So far my labs have been fine.  I do watch them CLOSELY, actually track each set of labs for trends then supplement according to what is there.  It was suggested to me to trend the labs and I'm so thankful, if I hadn't I'm sure I would by now be anemic and/or have Vitamin D deficiency.

My experience is the majority of the medical population DOESNOT worry about drops in labs, only deficiencies, so being in a preventive state is necessary.  You are your best advocate.

If you did well with the Band, why not consider the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy?  If you didn't do well and it wasn't because of mechanical failure, you may be better off going with a WLS that includes malabsorbancy.  Did you also consider the DS with a smaller stomach and longer common channel?

All the best to you,
Leila
