stretched stoma?

I had never heard of a stoma let alone a stretched stoma prior to my surgery.  It was about 9 months afterwards that I had read about it somewhere.  I have had water with meals.  Does this mean I've stretched the stoma?  How can I find out if I've done damage or not.  My surgery was 3 years ago and I never lost much weight.

I am curious about this also. I want to know how to tell if our stoma is stretched. Do we have to have some sort of test?

your surgeon would do an endoscopy and look at the stoma.

I am 3 1/2 years out.  About 15 month out I had an upper endoscopy (sp) and was told my stoma was about the size of a quarter and should be about the size of a dime.  I had lost about 130 lbs.  I was told I would not lose any more.  I did lose a little more, but have gained it back, so the dr was right.  He said drinking while eating could have caused it to be bigger, which I do a little of.   Also, he said it could just be something that happened.  I struggle with regain on a daily basis.

I believe that's what is wrong with me now too.  I think the stoma is stretched and the food, no matter what kind, just slides right thru to the intestines.
I never knew about a stoma before.
I know some will say why didn't I research before surgery.  Well because I knew I HAD to do it so it didn't matter.
I'm happy with the results and will deal with this now.  At least I'm at a healthy weight to deal with it.

I agree we will just have to deal with this stoma we have ended up with.  Some people are having a stomaphyx (sp) but from what I hear it is not doing much good.  I would have to pay for it out of pocket and I do not like the idea of being put to sleep again.  I am only 5'1"  and would love to get back to 125, but I am afraid it is not going to happen.  I struggle to stay below 140.  I wore size 8 for a while, but I am wearing 10-12's not.

There is no way of knowing unless your surgeon goes and looks. Stomas can sometimes stretch on their own... I was also told they can stretch by eating and drinking (the liquid forces the food thru the stoma) and also not chewing your food well enough (basically allowing big chunks of food to go down).

I have probably been a little quilty of all of these.  I still consider a stomaphyxm, but I have not heard too many good things about the procesure.  I would probably have a hard time getting my doctor to do it, because my weight is pretty good.  I just would like to get back to my low weight and it seems it is not going to happen.  I know I should be thankful for my weight loss and I am.  It is just that I struggle so hard to stay here.  I know it would be so easy for me to gain back a lot of weight.  I get tired working on it and worry about it.   Understand?

If you weigh 139 I dont believe you wouldnt find a Dr to do the procedure, especially if you are just wanting to get back to your low of 125. It is 'typical' to regain approx 10% of what one has lost and your gain from 125 to 139 would pretty much fall there. If you are struggling to maintain I would still address the issue with the surgeon and see what they say about it. I would stop any 'bad' habits and stick to the pouch rules and see if that helps you maintain easier.

I know you are right.  I am only 5'1" and I sure did like the 125 wt.  I have a bunch of clothes that are just too snuggle to wear.  My surgeon says I am okay.  I am 62 and he tells me age, menaphase, etc. play into the weight gain.  When doctors look at a person like me after seeing much heavier patients, they do not have much symphany.  I understand their thoughts, but it does not help me.   I know if I do not really watch what I eat, I will have a major gain.  I have come too far to go back there.  I realize my problem seems small to most people on this board, but it is still a major concern to me.

Thanks for listening.  I guess I am just venting.
