1-does anyone supplement?

2-with what?

3-can we (RNY folk ) absorb OTC supplements???

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Hi Margo!
Maybe I can help. I work in a vitamin store.
1- Yes, people do. Not me, but anyone with a iodine deficiency, or has a concern with getting enough "greens" in their diet.
2- Sea Kelp. It's in your "greens" section in any reputable vitamin supplement store. Comes in many forms, powder, capsules, drink mixes etc. Just read some labels or ask a sales clerk to help you.
3- Yes. I take over and beyond what most RNY'ers take and I think I absorb pretty much everything I take. The "general" rule of thumb (on most supplements, but not all...) for a WLS patient, with malabsorbtion, (not a lap-bander) is about twice as much as a normal person would take. For instance is something reads on the label to take 500 mg once a day, I would take 500mg, twice a day or I would take a 1000mg once a day. I'm no doctor, nor do I play one on TV.... but I think this is pretty close to what a doc would tell you. However.....the exceptions to this are:
Magnesium- too much mag can give you diarrhea. Anything over 600mg a day will probably keep you in the bathroom.
A, D, E, & K- These are "fat-soluble" vitamins. Your body stores these. So you can take too much. Go by your labs on these. Have your doc run the tests for these and you'll figure out how to supplement accordingly.
Iron- Too much of this is toxic, so again go by your labs to see ifd you're deficient.
Just make sure you are buying your vitamins at a store where they actually know about nutrition and supplements, and are not just selling you something, cause they work on commission. Have them check for interactions with whatever medications you currently taking, also. This is also important. Do your homework, and you'll be fine! Hope this helped!

lyn...yes ! thank you!
i have no ins right now so am not getting my labs done as i know i should- and i am questioning the iodine as there is family history of thyroid issues...and i am  feeling some of the symptoms associated with deficiency--and do not eat enough greens right now- nor do i use salt...

so-i will be armed with info as i hit the vit store! thx!!!

No problem, glad to help. There's also several thyroid combination formulas, that help the thyroid function properly. I'll post a link to a page from my companies website. You can also order these directly from the website, if your town doesn't have a Vitamin Shoppe near you. A lot of people swear by these herbal supplements for thyroid issues, it's just finding the one that works for you. Have a great Sunday!
