Excessive Gas/Flatulence?

Good morning everyone! Has anyone had issues with this before? I'm sure someone somewhere has. It's making me crazy! I very rarely tooted before and it's making me crazy because it's all day long, every day now! Not to mention embarrassing? I am about 1.5 yrs out and very happy with the results. I am not sure if the as is related to the surgery and the doc doesn't have any ideas either (not my bariatric surgeon, he moved and so did we). I have tried eliminating artificial sweeteners, milk...nada. Any ideas?
Thanks very much!

Are you taking a fiber supplement?  Specifically Benefiber?  That stuff nearly ruined my life...I nearly blew the roof off taking that.  Some other brands cause gas too.  Just a thought.

Benefiber causes so much gas, it is crazy.  I take Devron and it helps alot.  My Dr. says gas is  a really common problem for us WLSers.  You are not alone lol.

Devron? Is that available over-the-counter? It would be wonderful  if it were! I do not take a fiber supplement at all but do try to make sure there's fiber in the foods I eat.

I have a lot of gas too. It doesn't seem to matter what I eat either.  It's all day and all night EVERYDAY!!! I hate it.

Yep, mine has gotten worse since surgery. If I'm not eating properly it gets REALLY bad (if I eat sugar or bad carbs). I ordered some Devrom back in the summer and it did help so maybe you could give it a try! Good Luck!

I have on and off gas....When I eat right...no gas!  When I eat sugar and/or simple carbs...You can call me tootsie!  And with the sugar comes the really gawd awful smelly kind too...

I take probiotics when I eat cheese or something carby or sugary...THAT really helps!  If I forget to take a probiotic, once the really wicked kind of gas starts, it takes about a week or two for the probiotic to kick in and begin working.

Otherwise, I can keep it pretty well under control as long as I am eating healthy and well...but milk and broccoli and cabbage type foods will get me too..but only til it's digested...USUALLY...LOL

Artificial sugars are BAD on my guts! I cannot tolerate sugar alcohols...That's when the gas gets extremely painful as well as noisy when it FINALLY moves on out!

Probiotics usually save me...I love them...Take them all the time...

What are probiotics?

Hi Tracey....

Here is an excerpt from the Mayo Clinic...I've been taking probiotics for several years...Even before WLS.

"Your body contains billions of bacteria and other microorganisms. The term "probiotics" refers to dietary supplements or foods that contain beneficial, or "good," bacteria that are similar to those normally found in your body. Although you don't need probiotics to be healthy, these microorganisms may provide some of the same health benefits that the bacteria already existing in your body do — such as assisting with digestion and helping protect against harmful bacteria. "

And

There is encouraging evidence that probiotics may help:

  • Treat diarrhea, especially following treatment with certain antibiotics
  • Prevent and treat vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections
  • Treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Reduce bladder cancer recurrence
  • Shorten the duration of intestinal infections
  • Prevent and treat inflammation following colon surgery (pouchitis)
  • Prevent eczema in children

I have to agree with Anita.....Probiotics are the BEST!!!!

I take generic Probiotic "biospheres"  (compare to "pearls") from VitaCost, but I started by trying Acidoppolous (sp?) from Wal-Mart.  It was rather inexpensive and made a HUGE difference.

I, like you, very seldom tooted before surgery, and after, my family could NOT believe how bad I was.  I was mortified.  I tried the probiotics and am now back to normal.

Good luck!

Tell someone that you love them!
