I got my lab results today and was able to compare this year to last year and the year before.

The most important (to me):

Cholesterol: 246 to 229
HDL: 83 to 87
LDL: 142 to 124
LDL/HDL Ratio: 1.7 to 1.4

The most important to us:

Iron: 109 to 123
Iron Binding: 350 to 397 (not sure how that works so high!)
Saturation stayed at 31
Unsaturated: 241 to 274

Calcium: 9.5 to 9.3
Folate: 23.19 to 26.54 (too high)
B-12 736 to 613...I'll be increasing my B-12, this next year
Vitamin D: 48.6 to 47 (up from the first year at 39.9)
Intact PTH: 21 to 43..

All the others, I'm still working on what they are and what they mean but they've stayed pretty much the same. Comments?
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Vit D is low by modern stds. So I'm guessing your A is also low. PTH went up, tho not dangerous, up makes me nervous.

zinc?

B1? B6?

what else ya got there?

I figure I'm asking the PCP about the PTH and the Vit D too...because I'd like to be high of normal on the D and low of normal on the PTH..

Zinc and B-1 haven't come back yet..B-1 last year was 2.8 but I don't have any norms on that. Thoughts on what is normal? I can't seem to find Zinc last year either. I'm figuring to ask about that too. My PCP is usually pretty good at getting me what I want.

Actually, Vitamin A is way over the top. 186 from 86 last year. What could that be?

Do you think that the PTH might be too high because I'm taking too much calcium? I'm taking way over what is recommended and thinking I should scale it back because I started taking more after the labs last year and PTH went from 21 to 43. I've been looking at PTH levels and what they mean and they usually go with the calcium being low but mine isn't, at least it's been the same for three years.

I found a site that said Intact PTH norms are as high as 65, which is way higher than I have..But why would PTH go up and nothing else go either way? tumor? Hard to believe.

PTH keeps the blood calcium normalized.  When it is high, that means it's trying to pull calcium from your bones.  When you really have to worry is when the PTH is elevated and the calcium is also elevated.

My PTH has been elevated for years.  I went to Mayo Clinic to have it evaluated and all they came up with was 4 gland hyperplasia.  No reason and nothing to do about it.  My rheumatologis****ches it like a hawk along with my calcium and bone density.

If you haven't had a bone density done, you might want to have one.  Just to be sure everything is okay.  I have osteoporsis.  But my bone loss started long before the RNY which is strange.  Generally speaking, when you are heavy, you have stronger bones.  Go figure.

And I agree with Vitalady, that while your's is elevated, it really isn't high enough to worry about.  But it should be watched along with your calcium levels and bone density.

I really appreciate your reply...Yes, I planned on asking for a few extra tests this year speaking to my PCP..One was bone density and the other is the colonoscopy..She asked me about it last year and I declined...put it off. But these things need to be addressed pro-actively and so...no time like the present, while I have really good insurance.

I don't have a family history of osteoperosis or colon cancer. It's really nice to know family history back on all my limbs..LOL.

Thanks so much!

No. The other way around. High PTH means those lil fellas are working over time to transport calcium from bones/teeth to heart. Bad.

You want enough calcium on board for EVERYBODY and put the PTH fellas back into part time work, no over time.

What is calcium?

What is D 25?

In simple terms, D goes up, PTH goes down. D falls, PTH goes up.

65 is clinical normal, not optimal. It means, some bone loss is dandy with the folks who print the data without a face attached.

Oh, I get it. So, not enough D and not enough calcium is where I'm at. I had no changes in calcium level, that means the PTH is pulling it from my bones..Got it.
