Dental Question

Good Afternoon all,

I am a 4th year dental student and have seen numerous patients post WLS with a similar problem. Other than the common tooth sensitivity, I have seen all of them with severe bone loss around their back teeth. It seems very abnormal because they all have very good oral hygiene and lack of bone loss in their front teeth.

I am thinking about doing some research into this subject to determine if this is a simple coincidence or if this is common in individuals post WLS and if so find a way to prevent it. Thank you for your time.

I've had some dental problems with a back molar, but it's hard to tell if it's WLS related.  I take the Calcium Citrate and Vit D3 which are supposed to be in much larger quantities due to our malabsorbtion.

I'm also in my mid-60's, so am not too surprised at having some dental issues.

Good luck.

Most of us are vastly under supplemented with vit D and calcium, or those are not taken in the correct forms.

Some say the lack of drinking with meals can make things worse, but there is a such a thing as rinsing after meals.

I still have teeth after nearly 16 yrs, but I take huge doses of calcium citrate and have taken the correct form of vit D3 since day 1. Many of my peers, have had teeth crack or crumble, or well, they're just gone.

Sad, huh?

Since I've taken Actonel for 5 yrs AND had a REClast infusion, you can BET I'm on top of hygiene and check ups. I guess I have what? 10 yrs to wait now before I could have any dental surgeries?

That info came about 3 yrs into my treatment.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

Since surgery, I have developed decay at the gum line, all along my side teeth.  I do not know about bone loss and I am afraid to see the dentist due to the decay.  I don't think there is anything that he can do for that type of decay and so far, it does not bother me.

I take Calcium Citrate (2000 mg per day) and D3 (8,000 IU per day).  My D3 tests a bit on the "high" side but not dangerously high.

Tell someone that you love them!

I'm 7 years out and for the last year have been religious about vitamins and supplements.

About a year ago I had to have my first root canal but other than that my teeth have been just been fine.

One of the things my dentist and I discussed was that I grew up in California and they put what in the water?  Yep, we had Floride in our water.  I think that made every bit of a difference.

I'm 36, a few cavities and all my own teeth and one root canal (apicioectomy followed due to crummy materiel used in the root canal).
