Maybe 27.8 BMI was right
You may seen the news about the new JAMA article that found people that are "overweight" die at a lower rate compared to normal BMI people. http://articles.latimes.com/2013/jan/01/science/la-sci-overw eight-survival-20130102
This got me thinking. In 1980 the USA lowered the normal/overweight BMI cutoff from 27.8 to 25. This effectively mean that people (at that time) who were once normal became overweight. I find this interesting because my BMI is 27.2 and while currently classified as overweight, I have no desire to try to get to 25: I'd look like an African drought survivor!
I guess I can be happy I'll die at a lower rate than all those "normal" people. ![]()
So will I. At normal BMI of 24.9 I looked like anorexic and felt like one. I rather be "overweight"\ and happy than "skinny - normal BMI" and miserable.

I'm not a fan of the BMI method, anyway. My BMI is 25, but my body fat is 14% -- not bad for a 37-yo woman. If you have a lot of bone density or muscle mass, you'll skew heavy on the scale. Period.
I would rather have a healthy body fat percentage than give up lean mass for the sake of a magic number on a scale or BMI chart. :)
