Lorie, I can't speak for anyone else, but the reason I had RNY instead of gastroplasty or any of the other surgeries that can be done for weight loss is this: RNY has been the "gold standard" in weight loss surgeries for a few years now. I read long and hard on all the different variations on WLS, and it comes down to this, with RNY, you have two different modes of a "tool" to work with. You have the smaller stomach which will not allow you to overeat anymore (at one time) and you also have the malabsorption factor of the bypassing of part of your intestines. Yes, you can get around the smaller stomach if you wanted to by eating more frequent, fatty, calorie laden meals, but you can't get around the malabsorption. Whichever way you decide to go, make sure that you really have read up on the different procedures, you have a clear understanding of how they work and what side effects you might have to live with afterward (for example, with RNY you have to take vitamin and iron supplements faithfully for the rest of your life, and you just may need B-12 injections too, depending on your bloodwork) and then make a really informed decision based on your studies. Also, realize that any of these surgeries will only work as well as you let them, you are still in control of what you put in your mouth and adopting good eating and exercise habits. Good luck to you.

The admitting is often very difficult." ~ Julia Cameron "The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak becomes a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong. That block of granite is often nothing more than a decision." ~ Thomas Carlyle "Being yourself is not remaining what you were, or being satisfied with what you are. It is the point of departure." ~ Sydney Harris "Risk! Risk anything! Care no more for the opinion of others, for those voices. Do the hardest thing on earth for you. Act for yourself.
