My story.

Mar 16, 2021

I had my original RNY in 2009. Before surgery we didn't know my highest weight because there wasn't a scale that went high enough. At my highest I was at least 530lbs. Before surgery I was 480 I think. After my original surgery I got down to 365 at the lowest. For the following 11 years my weight stayed between 370-380.

I started having issues with my knees. I'm walking bone on bone in both legs. The surgeon said he wouldn't approve surgery until I was under 250lbs and older. Considering I have coworkers having knee surgery right and left, the only difference is my weight and not my age. This prompted me to seek a revision to my original RNY. My bariatric surgeon approved me for the duodenal switch. Due to craziness about my insurance and Covid-19, it was 2 years before I was scheduled for surgery. I had my revision to DS February 22, 2021. So I am now starting my new journey. The hospital scale said I was 366 the day of surgery.

I had some issues the day of surgery with my blood sugar they had to get it up before surgery. After surgery, I had issues with my magnesium levels. So I was stuck on fluids for that. No real issues with pain after surgery. I was up and walking the following day. I did well with the 2 weeks of liquids afterwards. I've done well with puréed foods. I did stick to mash potatoes, protein shakes and oatmeal. Today I get to start on moist soft foods including chicken. Hopefully my new journey goes well. Who knows, maybe cutting weight will help my knees and I won't need knee surgery. Regardless, it will be nice to fit into most chairs and wear whatever clothes I want.
