What is transection?

I'm confused. After all my research on surgery types, open vs. lap, distal vs. proximal, I've now been asked about a "transected" RNY. How is this different from staples? I honestly don't know what transecting is! I know what a staple gun is, and know how this is used, and how the needle and thread is used, but what is transecting?
