How reliable are pregnancy tests post op?

I am meaning like EPT or first response. I have not been to my PCP just yet for this. I am almost 3 weeks late & there is no sign of my period yet. I am 7 months post op & have not had a problem getting back to normal after surgery. However,this month..... So I bought a test & it was negative,but I dont know if i should trust it. Before I call my doc,I was wondering if this has happened to anyoe else. Thanks
