Is A Doctor Needed To Start A Support Group?

I am two hours away from my surgeon but feel the need to get together with others who have had surgery or who are considering it. What is needed to start a support group? Knowing we can only share are experiences and not give medical advice can those of us in ths area get together or would it be unwise without a medical professional directing the meeting? The support I receive from this site is the best but feel the need to meet one on one with others who understand the before and after of this surgery.
