Question:
I can eat 9-10 oz at 2 months post-op is this normal?

I am 2 months post-op with the Duodenal switch and I can eat 9 to 10 oz at a meal. The Dr. said that my stomach was 6 oz right after surgery and I am hungery all the time and I am afraid that I will never lose the weight. In the first 3 weeks I lost 33 lbs and than in the last 5 weeks only 5 lbs. I am just really scared I will never lose the weight and will have gone throught the surgery for nothing. Any suggestions?    — [Anonymous] (posted on October 25, 2001)

Hello, I am just 6 months post op and I can eat....lol....but really, I can eat any where from 8-16 oz at a time, it really just depends on what it is I am eating, if its soup then yes only about 8 oz - if its lettus..heheheh...then I can eat a half a head of that, but its within about an hour...I can eat a whole cucumber for a snack, and if its that time of the month, I need to eat every two hours or I am starved it seems, well it seems I am starved all the time, but I try milk, I can do whole milk, and I love my milk, but again if I feel stuffed then I stop, now I dont go over board on things like mashpotatos or stuff like that, and I cant really eat a lot of meat, but things like eating doritoes 1 3/4 oz bag I can also eat...I ve gone from 274.5 to 190 in 6 months, but I hit a 6 week platue there in november till mid december, that sucked....but its ok, just listen to your pouch and its ok, everyone is different, but you need to listen to you pouch, because if it feels full stop no matter what

The duodenal switch produces weight loss primarily by malabsorption. Although 9 ounces is more than I could eat at 2 months, it is not an outrageous amount. Remember that the 33 pounds you lost in the first three weeks had to include excess fluids. A more normal weightloss is about 20 pounds per month. When I was "stuck" at the same weight for nearly 2 months, my surgeon encouraged more protein and water. 80 grams of protein a day and a ton of water (mixed with Crystal Lite works best for me) have broken the dam and I am losing once again. Hang in there.

I am 12 wks post tomorrow. And I too can eat 9 - 10oz at a meal (and sometimes more depending on what it is). I've spoken with more post RNY that are the same than fewer. We are all different and although I wish I could only do the 2 -3 oz that is recommended, my body and pouch are 'screaming' for more. I did this surgery so that I'd never have to 'diet' and be hungry again. What I am eating is far less and far greater nutritional value than what I was eating pre-op...so I'm ahead of the game. My weight loss is slower than I'd hoped, but my expectations were greater than they should have been. As long as the scale is going in the southern direction and our co-morbidities are under control, we're winning the battle. Don't listen to the previous post, it will only feed your doubts and anxieties. Make good nutritional choices, don't 'stuff' the pouch, eat slowly so you can stop when you're satisfied and not 'stuffed', get some regular (daily if possible) exercise and you and I will do great!
