Question:
Im so bummed, Weight loss is so slowwwwwwww.Help?

I went for my 3 month post op check last week and was very depressed. I had RNY on 8/8/01. I had lost 60 pounds, I started out at 437 pounds and at my 3 week check I had lost 36 pounds, which means in the last 10 weeks I had only lost 2.4 pounds a week. In discussing with my doc he didnt really have a suggestion. Im eating between 700 and 800 calories, getting about 80 ounces of water, had been getting 60 gm protein until 2 weeks ago when i upped it to 80 a day keeping the calories at 800. I am exercising regularly 5 times a week. Even my doc was disappointed with the loss, I started so big I should be losing more and he wants me to be ablt to maximize the first 6 months. I have no clue what to do differently. Any ideas I mean am I eating too little HELP! Sue    — Sue T. (posted on November 19, 2001)

Just curious???? Did you ever have a Thyroid work up done to see if your metabolisim isnt work up to par????? Just a thought. However I think your weight loss is great and Congrats to you. I had mine on 8/16/01 and lost 65# so far I need to lose another 50 and it seems to have slowed down quite a bit.....I did have a underactive thyroid and I am taking syntroid....So I would mention that to either the surgeon or your PCP...Good luck

Couple things. If you're getting your protein via the drinks, are you counting that in your cals? Adding 2-300 cal in protein drinks ups your caloric intake quite a bit. How's your carb intake? High carbs (not fruit or veggies but the bad kind) lead to slow loss. Lastly, are you exercising at your target heart rate for a minimum of 30 minutes? And lastly again :-)...your body just naturally slows down at certain times during this process. Be patient. Good luck and God Bless!

I think our age has a lot to do with how fast we lose. I don't know how old you are but some people level off at 2.5 lbs a week. Is your old stomach and new pouch transected? I quit losing and only lost 10 lbs in 4 months so my doc did an upper GI. My staple line had disrupted. He redid my surgery a month ago and this time he transected. I am losing a lot now. And it is permanent. No more staple line disruption ever! If a person is not transected, staple line disruption can occur at any time. Without transection, I never felt certain I could say "80 lbs lost forever!" now I can!

I started out at your weight and had lost about 60 pounds at 3 months. I am now 6 months out and am down a 110 pounds. I had the DS surgery and my surgeom at my 3 month check up thought i was doing great!I admit i would love to be losing faster but i guess my body isnt agreeing with me. It sounds like you are doing everything in your power to make the wls a sucess. relax and try to live one day at a time.

Sixty pounds in three months sounds like a very good weight loss to me. I averaged about ten pounds a month for the first 8 or 9 months, then it slowed down alot. I was also depressed at first, and then I learned to get off the scale! If you know you are eating right...high protein...low carbs...getting your water and exercising moderately, then the weight will come off. For some of us, it just comes off a little slower. The good news (for me) is that at 16 months post-op, I am still losing. It's slow, but it is steady. Please don't compare your weight loss to others. We are all unique. Some lose a great deal of weight in the first six months, and then stop losing completely. Some of us lose slower, but continue right down to that "ideal" range on the BMI chart. Which would you rather be?

WOW!!! 60 pounds in 3 months that is great! What other diet have you been on that you lost 60 pounds in three months? Just remember that our bodies are all diffrent and some drop fast and some drop slow. Keep your protein high, drink your water and keep up the workouts and I am sure it will all come off for you!!!
