Question:
I get very dizzy and light-headed when I don't eat. Is this hypoglycemia?

I just asked the doctor in chat about how when I don't eat for a while, I get very light-headed and dizzy. The doctor told me I should find a friendly diabetic and check my glucose level. Well, I don't know any diabetics, and I don't really know what the doctor meant. Is that an indication of hypoglycemia? Should I be concerned, and will it get worse after I have my surgery? Usually all I have to do is eat a little to make it go away, but after surgery I will not be able to eat much. Will it get worse? I don't want to be passing out all the time after this surgery. Thanks guys!    — Jennifer Y. (posted on January 11, 2002)

I'm a diabetic (hyperglycemic) and when my blood sugar drops too far I feel the same way. You really need to see a doctor because it's nothing to play with. Anyway, I can give you a clue of what to eat to possibly avoid this problem. When you eat any carbos try to incorporate a little protein. The carbs bring your blood sugar up and the protein helps keep it elevated for a longer period of time, avoiding the light headed feeling. Hope this helps.

I have the same exact problem, but I am not diabetic. The doctor has tested me multiple times for diabetes and hypoglycemia, both with negative results. I am pre-op so can't vouch for after the surgery, but I have to make sure that I eat a little something as soon as I get up in the morning. I think I will be better after the surgery because eating high sugar foods makes it worse with the ups and downs. Good luck. Feel free to email me.

Jennifer, I am a "reactive hypoglycemic". I am 5 week post op and I have not really had any problems. i get the same feeling when my glucose level is low and I get real shakey. I keep a little string cheese with me and whenever I feel low, that will help me. If you can not find a monitor to check you levels, go to a pharmicy and see if they have the urine test strips, or maybe you can rent a monitor from a medical supply store. You can also purchase them pretty cheaply. Let me know if I can be of any more assistance.
