Question:
Will a plateau break naturally on its own?

I'm almost 10 wks post-op and have not lost a single pound in 16 days. Other than chasing 3 kids all day long, I don't exercise. My daily intake is between 700-1200 calories and I'm probably getting about 40-50g of protein a day, and 40-50oz water. I've never tried a protein shake or supplement and I'm willing to, but I'm really hoping that this plateau will end on its own. I've lost 34lbs and would like to lose 75 more..any advice??    — Jennifer C (posted on May 18, 2002)

I have always heard that it takes increasing your output (excercise) and/or decreasing your input (eating fewer calories) to break a plateau. Good luck.

Jennifer: Wow, you can already eat 700-1200 calories/day? I couldn't eat that until about 6 months post-op. You must have healed quick or maybe had a different kind of surgery than I did. To answer your question, YES, plateaus end on their own and are nothing to worry about.

Jennifer, Your calories sound about right, but I think you should up your protein intake. Why don't you try either a protein bar or a protein shake? You can make some delicious shakes. Get some protein powder, like Isopure zero carb vanilla-mix 1 scoop with a handful of ice, some water, some coconut extract, 1/2 a can of crushed pineapple in its own juice, sweeten to taste and you have a pina colada! Add berries or some other fruit instead of the pineapple, vanilla extract instead of coconut and there are limitless possibilities. that should get the plateau moving. I have had several plateaus. They last anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks, then move down on their own, or try kickstarting with the protein increase.

Try increasing your water intake. Dehydration decreases your metabolism. I'm drinking more water and have noticed i've been losing lbs. again
