Question:
Do any of you post-op RNY-ers feel slightly yucky after eating?

I'm 6 weeks post-op open RNY, and I sometimes feel slightly ill after eating a meal. It doesn't matter what I eat, and it doesn't happen with every meal. I just sometimes feel a little lethargic and ill, like all I want to do is rest for about 30 minutes. Then, after about 30 minutes, I feel normal and can do whatever I want. Only once did I feel REALLY sick after I ate, and I had to go to sleep for about an hour until it passed. I know I'm not dumping because my sugar intake is very low. Does this happen or did this happen to anyone else? When did it go away? Thanks for any responses!    — Kristie B. (posted on June 18, 2002)

I have had this happen and still do from time to time at a year out. About one day out of every two weeks, I'll just not feel like eating much--food sits like a rock. I just eat lite or have soup for that time until I feel like eating again. I don't let it bother me too much. I figure it just goes with the territory. =)

I am 5.5 weeks post-op and experience the same thing. It doesn't matter what I eat, when I eat it, nor the amount, and it doesn't happen with every meal... but sometimes I will feel kinda icky and the only way to feel better is to lay down for 30 minutes. It's very strange. I don't know what causes it... but yes... I experience the exact same thing. Does that mean we're normal???? :)

I only feel this way if I have eaten too much and more so if the food was high in fat or very greasy. I am ten weeks post-op lap rny.

Hi - It sounds like you might be either eating to fast or too much, slow down and enjoy! If your problem persist, try a little liquid Mylanta it works great. Good Luck !!!

Yep, I feel the same way! I'm 6 weeks post-op open RNY. It's not always the amount of food I eat (very little) or how fast I eat it. It just happens. I can't wait until it doesn't happen any more!

I see "most" of the posters (so far) are newly post op. This is normal. However, as the first poster, I too am a year post op. It still happens some although thankfully not too much. I use to love tarter sauce and mayonase. Well they sure make me feel ill too. I have learned that I can have, "just alittle tiny portion" of it. I'll put up with the ill feeling occasionally just to enjoy them. But you are so new post op that it is a healing and learning process. It will get better. Time will take care of it.

I'll be 7 weeks post-op open RNY this Thursday. I feel hunger but still nothing tastes really good to me. I force myself to eat most of the time, and most of the time feel icky afterwards...a feeling bordering on nausea, but not quite. I find the less I eat at a sitting, the less icky I feel. So it may be a matter of quantity. I believe I have a "slow emptying" pouch because not matter what, even a hour and a half after eating, I can't drink water. It backs up my esophagus. I have an appt. today with my surgeon to see if perhaps I have a narrowed stoma or stricture. The constant sick feeling isn't helping, I know. I find it to be very depressing, in fact. Hugs, Joy

What is the fat content in the foods you're eating? I get that way from high fats. It is dumping. You can dump from both sugar and fat. Do your intestines make a lot of noise when it happens? Mine sure do. And I feel way better after the little cat nap.

I am now 7 months post op (-125lbs) and I still do this on a daily basis. Not with everything I eat but with most. I am so glad you asked this question, I just wish more long term posties would have answered so we'd know.
