Question:
I currently take Demerol and Phenergan for pain, not weight lose related,

and I also was on Morphine for several months. Since my immune system has grown use to these meds, what whould be another pain med that I could receive after surgery?    — Mabel W. (posted on July 11, 2002)

I take Hyrdocodone, generic for Lortab. It works great for me. There are many pain meds out there. Your surgeon will know what to give you.

Please dont worry. I had been on several strong pain meds prior to my WLS. I just made sure my doc was aware and we had no trouble in post op pain control. As long as they know then they can help. I still have to take the pain meds after surgery but my pain is not related to WLS.

I had been taking Tylenol 3 just about daily for my fibromyalgia and chronic jaw pain, pre-op. Post-op I took Lortab Elixir (liquid Vicodin) and it took care of all my surgery pain beautifully. I'm back on the Tylenol 3 now and find I don't need as much as pre-op. Incidentally I became quite nauseous on the morphine in the hospital and they had to stop the continuous drip (I could still use my pump, but didn't), and gave me Toradol which worked really well. There are quite a few options available for pain control. Just let them know upfront, in detail, what you've been taking and they'll find the right thing for you. Hugs, Joy
