Question:
A month has past, no weight lost, I gained 2 lbs!!

I'm almost 5 months post-op. I've lost nearly 80lbs, which I am very grateful for. However, over the last month I have not lost any weight, in fact I've gained 2lbs! I've followed the Atkin's Diet in the past and it worked great. I lost 50lbs in the months before I had my Lap RNY. Now, I'm averaging 75 to 80 grams of protein a day, I only eat about 10 grams or less from carbs and that is from veggies, so I guess I am following the Atkin's Diet and I do allow myself some fats, like butter and regular mayo, just in small quantities. I drink 80 oz of water a day, sometimes more and I walk briskly for an hour 3 to 4 times a week. I'm getting really discouraged. I'm only 5 months post-op, the weight should still be coming off fast, certainly not stopping this soon, and I definitely shouldn't be gaining! I feel like I had this surgery for nothing. I could have kept doing the Atkin's Diet and lost weight on my own, granted it would be slower but at least then I would have been able to eat as much as I want. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions (just don't tell me not to do Atkin's)? I want to be on a diet, believe it or not.    — Angie B. (posted on July 26, 2002)

Haven't had surgery yet (open RNY 8/6/02), but at last nights support group meeting, this was discussed it detail. Are you currently at a weight that you had at one time maintained? They say it is common to hit a weight that your body was used to and stay for a while. The suggestions were to up your protein even more (for each 2.2 lbs. you weigh you should have 1 gram of protein) It was also suggested to add a day of aerobics to really get things moving. Again, I'm not there yet, but, try to remember that before WLS the stall in weight loss would have spun into the end of the "diet". You are doing great, try not to focus so much on the scale as the tape measure, you most likely are losing fat, but gaining muscle, which weighs more, but looks so much better. Keep up the great work. God Bless!

Angie, sounds like you are doing all the right things and may just be on a plateau, altho a longer one than you'd prefer. I, too, have gained the 2 pounds, and stared at the scale in amazement! How could that be? But a few days later, it usually goes away along with 1 or 2 more. Keep in mind that since you lost 50 pounds pre-op, your body has been losing for quite a while and not just for 5 months. It may just be time for the body to take a small break. Keep up the protein, water and walking. And try to just weigh yourself every few weeks. This will pass. You are a rare bird, though, wanting to diet!

Hi Angie, I haven't had my surgery yet, I am pending approval from my insurance company. I do know that you need at least 64oz water a day. Also, if a lot of the foods you are eating are of a high salt content, you need more water to release the extra salt in your body. Good Luck. Deb
