Question:
Starting new job & unsure of myself

After being a stay-at-home Mom for the past few years, I got a job. I start Tuesday, and it's something I have never done before; being a server in a restaurant. I had open RNY 2/11/02 and am down 136 pounds; from 322 to 186. I feel so unsure of myself...I have been hiding at home for so long, and now it's time for me to join the 'real world'...it's like I'm not sure how I will interact with others, since I am still trying to get to know the new me. I know that the first thing people will see is not my weight, but what will they see?? I know I need to just take a deep breath and dive in, I guess I am just looking for some reassurance and maybe some similar situations. Thanks!    — Jennifer G. (posted on September 8, 2002)

I'm still a pre-op, so I can't answer the body image thing, but I can answer as a co-worker and a frequent restaurant diner. People will notice your smile, your facial expression and body language, and they will notice how well-groomed you are. You can do this. If you are like most of us, your self-confidence has taken a beating over the years, but if you can believe that you deserve to take your place in the world, and if you are ready to get out there and take what's yours, you will do fine. Best of luck to you.

THE FIRST THING THE CUSTOMER SEE'S IS YOUR SMILE!! BE NICE, BE FRIENDLY, ACT LIKE YOU ARE ENJOYING YOUR SELF! FAKE IT TIL YOU MAKE IT! NO KIDDING! I HAD MANAGED A RESTURANT FOR 10 YRS, THE SMILE AND FRIENDLY SERVICE BESIDES GOOD FOOD GETS YOU A BIG TIP. EVEN IF YOUR NOT HAPPY ACT LIKE YOU ARE! BEING GOOFY IS BETTER THAN NOT LOOKING HAPPY! YEAH I AM GOOFY ALOT WHEN I AM NOT SURE OF MY SELF! GOOD LUCK!
