Question:
Any suggestions for jump-starting the weight loss at 5 months post-op?

I had WLS on 08/05/02. I started at a weight of 391 and height of 5'8". I am now at 259 and have reached a plateau. I do my best to get in my water, protein and exercise. Just wondering if anyone started out with similar stats and what their personal experience has been. Any suggestions for getting me over through this plateau? I know I should be happy with losing 132 pounds in 5 months, but it's still frustrating. — c B. (posted on January 8, 2003)

Hi. My stats aren't the same but I am at a 5 month killer of a plateau myself. I started at 243lbs and 5'3" smashed into a wall at 179. Extremeley happy and grateful for the loss so far. 65 pounds in 5 months but I really have fallen off the wagon, so to speak, over the holidays. I ,yesterday, went back on the protein and no sugar thing. Trying to get the water in and the excercise too. Back to basics seems to be the thing I've heard the most. That and a change in the routine can kick start things. Good Luck to you and Congrats on the SUPER loss. Penny Collins 7/31/02 LAP RNY -65 :-)

My starting weight was 371, and at 4 months post-op I am down 107lbs. I have hit the plateau also. I know that frustration of thinking Omy is this it, but I guess we will just have to hang in there. Congratulations and Best Wishes.

Hey, this is what I did. Ate like crazy for a few days. 1500 calories if I could, get your body thinking hey, we are getting food now. Maybe 1500 calories is too much for you, but I don't think so. But you don't want to eat enough to GAIN. Anyway, then, I started a protein shake for breakfast (I use Real Meals but it MUST be cold, and made with milk to taste decent. I also add banana and yogurt) Anyway, then a lean cuisine for lunch and dinner, No high cal snacks, even if it is protein. For snacks, I found soy crisps here in the south, they have protein and low cal. Tastes good (onion flavor). Keep calories low, 800 or so, lots of water, protein and exercise. I bet it will work. I only do it for a few days and drop 4 pounds usually!

My stats are different than yours...and I am only 13 weeks out but I also hit a plateau for 2 weeks..when I called my surgeons office the nutritionist said that it takes some time for your body to adjust to a sudden huge drop in weight..she also recommended that I measure myself because she was sure that I was losing inches..guess what..I did..after that plateau broke I was a few inches smaller all over..just keep with your program and you will start losing again!!Good Luck....and congratulations on the great loss so far..keep focused on that!

You've probably heard this before, but you will experience periodic plateaus lasting varying lengths of time. It is the body's way of trying to play catch up and also trying to hold onto whats left as the body has an internal protective measure and doesn't want you to starve it. To shake up a plateau, believe it or not, eating a few hundred extra calories a day - good protein- does work. Also, just upping the protein, lowering the carbs/sugar, upping the water intake and upping the exercise also works. But bottom line, the plateaus will happen. BTW, 132 in just 5 months is incredible!

c b - I really don't know what you are complaining about... I am 5'4" and started out at 427 on 7/17 and am now at 288 just short of 6 months - a loss of 139. So we've lost just about the same about of weight - I've lost 7 pounds more, but had my surgery 3 weeks earlier than you.
My surgeon, nutritionist and primary physician are all very pleased with the amount of weight loss that I have experienced - as am I. I don't know why you should not be pleased with your 132 pound loss in 5 months.
This weight wasn't put on overnight and it's not going to come off overnight either...JR (open RNY 07/17 -139 pounds)
