Question:
Does anyone really know what is malabsorbed in rny'ers?
Is everything partially malabsorbed that we eat or just certain things? I've heard just fats are malabsorbed and carbs we get the full load. Is that right? — scottiemaam O. (posted on February 19, 2003)

You will probably get alot of answers on this, but to make this a success I
don't count on any mal-absorbtion of calories. I count them all. My Dr.
said that most of the malabsortion is of vitamins and minerals, and there
is no way to determine exactly how many calories are not absorbed because
no two people are exactly the same. Make sense?

I've heard that fats are malabsorbed as well. Something like 1/3 of all the
fat we eat doesn't really count. Which is why we have to eat alot of
protein, b/c not all of it gets to us. I heard the same as the previous
poster, I'm not sure if calories do or not. But I also count all my
calories. I believe the malabsorbtion is also the reason we have to take
alot of vitamins b/c they don't all get absorbed as a person with a normal
stomach. Don't know much more, sorry!

I was told about 15% is not absorbed..the rest is. Unless you have a
distal rny, then it is greater..25%
