Question:
Just wondering if drinking caffine coffee promote plateaus?

For the last three months I have been drinking about 20oz of reg coffee/cream(international version Hazelnut ) like crazy daily and I have experienced a plateau for about 3 months also. I was counting the coffee as water intake along with the cystal light I consume (about 55 ozs)daily. Now I'm wondering if I have been doing it all wrong. I started last week to take my protien supplement again to see if this will get thing back on the roll. Has any one experienced a plateaus this long? I am 8 months post-op and I have lossed 112lbs. I would like to lose 75 more lbs before my 1 year anniversary or get over the 200lbs mark. What I am I doing wrong?    — Nita R. (posted on February 23, 2003)

I know there are conflicting opinions on this, but coffee does tend to act like a diuretic. Most advice is that, if you are going to drink regular coffee, you need to drink that much water, in addition to your 64 oz. of water. Also, you didn't say how much of the creamer you are using, but that may also be part of the problem. Having said that, I would not advise you to stop the coffee completely cold turkey. Caffeine withdrawal is HORRID. In fact, there was a question on the board from yesterday about it. The question, as it shows on the list of questions mentions headaches. I think I'd try drinking one less cup of reg coffe a day for several days, then cut back one more, etc. If that doesn't break the plateau, then it's something else. Good luck!

I think that creamer you're using has lots of carbs - you may want to check that out and switch to something else. "Fat Free" tends to mean full of carbs. I drink my coffee w/half-n-half. Very creamy and no carbs! Lots of fat though, but I don't count fat, so I drink up!

Drinking coffee-even with the cream should not cause a 3 month plateau. However, you may not be getting in enough water and water is what you need to make urine which is how the fat leaves the body. Coffee definitely should NOT be counted as water intake. So, try cutting down a little on the coffee and increasing the water intake substantially. You also cdon't say how your eating (protein first?), if you drink with meals, and are you exercising? All those things can effect a plateau...

I was told by a dietician that caffine dehydrates the body. I was taken off all caffine by my doctor and I have to say that I feel much better. I do drink 1-2 mugs of decaf in the morning while getting ready for work. I have replaced the caffine with 6+ 8oz glasses of water a day. The same dietician also said that the caffine whether it be in coffee or soda does not equal the same fluid amount in your liquid intake that you take a day. I hope that makes sense to you. Liquids in say coffee, soda, beer, wine or alcohol should not be included in your fluid intake for the day that you are supposed to get with the water that you are supposed to drink.

Caffeine is a diuretic and can make you dehydrated but it shouldn't give you many problems if you drink enough water. The rule is 1 additional 8oz glass of water for every 8 oz of caffeinated beverage. Also, be careful with the creamer...it's kinda high in sugar. Maybe try half and half with some Splenda...see if that helps anything.

I'm a die hard coffee drinker & I use regular coffee mate which has about 2 carbs per tablespoon. Since coffee is a diuretic, the suggestions about drinking the same amount of water per cup of coffee is mine too. Maybe if you doubled the amount of water it would help. Member, we pee our fat out. Good luck!
