Question:
Any suggestions for aerobic-type exercises with a broken foot?

OK, I'm the world's biggest dork. I tripped a few nights ago and broke my foot; doctor says I will probably be casted for 6 weeks. I am four months post-op and had recently begun to get into exercising...and now I have no idea what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions for something I can do which won't require me putting weight on one of my feet? Ugh. Did I mention I'm the world's biggest dork? Thanks in advance...    — Tamara K. I don't know about any aerobic type exercises but you can do other things. Certain types of yoga where you do the moves in a seated position on the floor would be great. Not something like quigong or tai-chi where you would have to be standing most of the time. Or you could use free weights or a total body gym and do some weight training. Those are the only things I can think of off the top of my head right now. I'm sure there are other things you could do too. Good luck!

There are exercises that are not aerobic, but are toning, Pushups, crunches, leg lifts - anything like that - but LOTS and LOTS of repetitions. This is actually better for us for muscle tone and extra skin.

I think that I may actually rival you as the world's biggest dork! Does your orthopedic doctor have a physical therapist that they work with? If so call them or go see them once and ask about exercise that you can do. I have found them to be really informative. You certainly don't want to do anything to slow the healing process and you will most likely have a little physical therapy after your cast comes off anyway. Have a dorky day!! Tee Hee :)

If the cast is just on your foot, and you still have use of your knee (it can bend), what about stationary bikes? They usually have stirrups over the pedals that you can strap your cast into...

The stationary bike idea sounds good. There is another type of bike, and I hope I have the spelling right here. It's called "recumbent," and you are sitting, but in a more reclined position. It would allow for less stress on the foot area. I think most gyms would have them, if you are able to get there! If you're wanting something more aerobic, try chair dancing. You can get a lot of parts moving without putting pressure on your foot. Good luck, and I don't think you're a dork at all. Accidents do happen.

I don't really have anything to add, but I like the chairdancing idea! Sounds fun. :)

I know someone else said this but I agree with trying yoga, I have an abs yoga tape and it is a great workout! It's also very relaxing.

Ask you MD for a referral for physical therapy and then find a PT gym that does cardiac/stroke rehab. There is a machine they use that is somewhat like a stationary bicycle but you use your arms rather than your legs to get your heart rate up. My sister was in rehab and used one while she was there. Good luck.

I would not swim in a cast!!!! ever. don't feel like a dork. I broke an ankle stepping off a curb. Physical therapy is an awesome idea if you can get it.
