Question:
how much weight loss per week. . ,

I'm at 2 1/2 months post-op and was wondering what the average weight loss per week is at this point. I'm a little disappointed that it seems to have slowed down in the past month to only 2 to 3 pounds a week. Is this about right, or considered rather slow. I drink all my water, get in all my protein and walk every day and work out 3 to 4 times a week. I wasn't a light weight, but I am 48 and have diabetes. I have a family reunion in late June and was hoping to have more lost by then. So far I've lost 53 lbs. I know we shouldn't compare, but I was just curious where I was in relationship to everyone else.    — Kathy S. (posted on April 16, 2003)

Congrats 53 pounds is awesome. To loose more just double your exercise. Swimming burns twice the calories of walking and is easy on the joints. Its normal for you loss to slow, and plateaus do occur but your doing great!

I was exactly where you are right now. At 10 weeks post-op, I had lost 54 pounds. Right now I am 11 weeks and 5 days post-op, and I have lost 64. I started out at 325, I'm 5'9", and I drink water, get protein, and exercise. I think we are close to where we are supposed to be. There are people who lose faster than we do, but there are also a lot of people who lose slower than we do! Keep up the good work - look how far you have come!

I have read that post op patients lose on average, 3-5 pounds a week. You seem right on track even though it feels slow. In addition to all you are doing with liquid, protein, and exercise I watch the number of carbs I take in each day and closely monitor my food choices. You are to be complimented for how faithfully you are working your plan. Hang in. I'll bet you will have weeks of higher loss soon and then weeks of lower loss but the end result will still result in success!

I'm about where you are right now, too. I'm 8 weeks postop and down 56 lbs. I'm 48 years old with borderline diabetes and started at 348 lbs. Half the loss happened in the first two weeks and now it's down to about 2 - 3 lbs./week. I haven't been getting quite enough of any of the big three: (water, exercise, protein) but doing the best I can. I figure each pound gone is a pound gone forever. That's helping me deal with the fact that I can't seem to get the weight to fly off as fast as I might like. I figure at this rate, I'll be down about 150 lbs. in a year and that feels like a miracle to me at this point. Good luck to you!

53lbs is great. I am three years post op. When I started to lose weight I didn't lose weight every week. But I did drop ten pounds a month, especially after my cycle. I believe with this surgery you won't lose weight everyday or every week but you will drop the weight. It may not happen as fast as you would like but it will happen. Just keep doing what you are doing and be patient. Your body has to adjust to losing the weight.
