Question:
what is a good meal plan?

Hi again, I'm having so mush trouble figuring out a diet plan. I'm 9 days post op, still on full liquids, I'm not sure if I'm getting in what I should be getting in. This stage doesn't concern me as much as the next stage, soft/purreed, and then the full stage. Can someone who uses protien shakes tell me where the shakes would fit in once I start on those stages. DO I use them as part of my liquid intake? or as an in between snack? I"m sooooooooooo confused.. lol. I found a shake I like, I'm just not sure when to have them.. lol. PLease feel free to email me. Thanks Lap RNY 5/15/03 down 13lbs    — KellyJeanB (posted on May 24, 2003)

Hi, Kelly. It is confusing to try to figure this out and you will get as many different answers as there are people. I drink my shake in between meals. I don't drink anything thirty minutes before or after and for my meals, I don't drink 15 mins before and one hour after. I do not count it against my water. I try to get in 64 ounces of water in addition to all the other liquids. This is what my surgeon requires and it is really up to your individual surgeon. They are all different. Good luck.

as the first poster says.. everyone is different, and I'd wager that even patients of the same doctor followed their own plans differently. Did your doctor give you some guidelines? Shame on him/her if not... how about a dietician familiar with weight loss surgery? Is there one on staff at your doc's office? You should really be checking with your doctor or his/her office... please.

At your stage, I was only doing 2 shakes per day. I did one before food in the morning, then one mid-day. I was to have 6 one oz meals per day. Of course, in the olden days we had only soy as a choice. Gritty, thickens upon standing, blech! So, it was definitely one of my meals. Today, with whey + water, I do 6-8 30g shakes per day, and count it as neither water nor meal. More like a "free" beverage, like Crystal Light. My kidneys still have to "sort" even the CL, so I don't count it as water. Unfortunately my new pt book said ONLY PURE CLEAR WATER IS WATER. That didn't leave me much negotitating room, huh? I keep trying to get a doc to say that non-water is water, especially a uroologist. No luck in 9 yrs. They all have said that only water is water. <I hate that rule>. The protein has a job to do, places to go. There is no "waste" with just powder + water. Unless you add milk & bananas (the classic wt gain formula) or real juices, there is no "left over" with protein supplement to turn into fatty tissue.
