Question:
What size clothing am I shopping for?

I don't understand the next clothing size. I've been shopping in the plus size clothing for a long time and I do understand the 26/28, 22/24 and on down. Now I'm at 14/16 and that's the smallest size in the plus size dept. Where do I go now? Womens sizes? Junior sizes? What is the next size under the 14? What is a 13 and what is with the odd numbers? Is the 14 plus size the same as a 14 in the "regular" sizes? Where do I go next? Thanks for helping me dress myself!    — jocelyn (posted on June 3, 2003)

You want to go to a size 12. You can keep going down in the even sizes. A size 13 is juniors. They are cut smaller and for more petite people. I found out they make a juniors 15. I can where it, and I'm in a size 14. (I'm short.) So, you could try a 15 or a 12. Usually, what you wear in an even size (or Misses) is a smaller number than what you will wear in a juniors size. Hope this helps. Congrats on the weight loss!!! EXCELLENT!

Wow! Congrats on your tremendus success so far. The 14 and 16 sizes in the women's/ladies department are not the same as the 14 Plus and 16 Plus. So the good news is the next department for you is ladies! The odd numbered sizes are juniors and they will run narrower. Keep in mind that sizes vary depending on the manufacturer. Happy shopping to you!

You're just going to have to shop around. Unfortunately, a 14 in a regular store isn't the same size half the time in another regular store, let alone a plus-size store! Odd size clothing sizes are juniors, however, so a plain 13, although close to a 14 in number, would probably fit like a 10 would, therefor for a junior size to fit properly, you may need a 17 or something, know what I mean? They are usually tiny sizes. Congrats on your weight loss so far- great job! I definately think you have graduated to regular clothing stores (most carry up to size 16 or XL anyway!) :-)

There's no way around this except trying stuff on -- clothing sizes are so crazy, and they get crazier the lower you go (but isn't it nice to try stuff on now?). My experience was that 16W and 14W are bigger than 14/16 regular women's sizes, and below that, I only know even numbered sizes. I don't "get" the juniors thing or odd sizes at all -- I still think of those as pre-teen sizes (not my style or my age bracket for sure!).

I know what you mean !!! I am down to a solid size 12 from misses. I can wear a Medium top. If it from the Junior department I take an X-Large. It really depends on where you go and who makes the clothes. I have fit into 1 size 10 outfit, but most any 12 off the rack fits. I do still wear my 14 jeans, they have been washed and dryed many times. The key is trying on everything !!! Good Luck

I'm at a similar stage, and find I have to try *everything* on. There really seems to be no consistency among manufacturers. In tops I can wear anything from a misses' size L or XL or 16 to a plus size 0X or 1X or 14/16. You'll probably end up looking at stuff in both plus size and misses departments for a while. Plus size tops are often longer or have bigger shoulders or sleeves, but even that isn't necessarily consistent. I've also learned the hard way that skirts seem to be the thing I grow out of the quickest, at least if they have buttons and zippers. It might be better to get elastic waist things, you'll be in them longer. My weight loss is *really* slow these days, but it doesn't take much to make a zippered skirt too big. Have fun, I really enjoy trying on clothes nowadays, especially since the weather has warmed up enough (usually) to not have to drag coats around. Plus, of course, weight loss gives us so much more stamina for those marathon shopping sessions!

I don't know if this is true or not... I read once that the Junior sizes (9,11,13, etc) are made to fit younger women's bodies (thus the "junior"), which normally are not as full in the hips and breast area yet. The Misses sizes are larger in the hips and breast area. I read this years ago, so I guess it's still true. My sister used to cut the denim for making jeans. She told me that the denim is stacked in 25 layers and all those layers were cut by a machine at the same time. What really surprised me is she said the material can shift during cutting, so that the bottom layer may be two inches larger all around than the top layer. Thus, although all size 12s are made from this cutting, one pair may be two inches larger in the waist and thighs than another. Sis says that since doing that job, she NEVER buys jeans without trying them on. Makes sense to me!
