Question:
Amusement Park questions....

Hi all you losers! I'm 4 months post/op and down 102 lbs from 368 to 266 and 6'0" tall... and I'm going to an amusement park tomorrow... Now, last year around this time (about 80 lbs heavier) I had a real hard time fitting my caboose (and the rest of me) in the roller coaster seats but I actually got in some... do you think I'll fit in most of them now? And do you think I should maybe not ride the big bad ones 4 months out from a LAP RNY? Or call the Doc? Thanks so much for your time!    — Leah S. (posted on June 5, 2003)

Leah: I went to King's Island a couple years ago. I am 5'5" and weigh 273...I was able to fit on all the rides except one of the older ones, but I wasn't very comfortable. At your height, being 266, you should be able to fit into most of them, I would think. Yes, I would call your doc about getting on some of the really "bumpy" ones, but I would think at 4 months it would be ok. Have a great time! Moiasa

Hello, I just got my season pass to Great Adventure this year as a celebration to KNOWING i was gonna fit on the rollar coasters. I was about 4 months out when we first went there to try out the rides and i was fine, I was flying out of those seats. I am now down 105 lbs and just about 7 months out. I ride all the big bad ones too :-) They are awsome!

Ride whatever you can fit on! I went to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure about 1 month after lap RNY and I had a blast! ( I asked my surgeon at my 2 week post op appointment and he said I could ride anything I wanted!) Got my King's Island Gold Pass for this year, but still too chicken to ride Son of Beast!

Oh and P.S. I no longer need an extender on an airplane... (and actually have a (LITTLE) slack)... so I'm thinking this is a good sign...

my sister has not had the surgery and i have but we were interested in going to a local theme park in ohio, cedar point..we decided to check their website to see if they have regulations on weight. well, at cedar point for the most popular rides you can not weight more than 250 to ride any of them...i have no idea if they actually stick to this rule but i know that when i went last year i weighed right around 260 and i didn't have any problems...i just think that it is horrible that they can design a ride to travel at 120 mph and go up a hill 420ft tall but they can't make seats a little larger and more comfortable...it stinks!

I"m sure you'll fit. As far as waiting, I was 1 month post-op and went to Disneyworld. Everything was fine except for the Tower Of Terror which goes up and down REAL fast, like an elevator. My new pouch felt strained when I got off. Thankfully I didn't damage anything. HAVE FUN!

It really depends on the park. I live in Atlanta and go to Six Flags often with my family. I am about 260, 5'6", and can ride about 1/2 the rides. None of the new roller coasters am I able to ride.About the only one is the Mind Bender, and it is tight. The Cyclone was a horrendous experience. I went through only to find I couldn't fit in the seat and had to get off the ride. Even my husband, who at 6'4" is maybe 15 lbs. overweight, could bearly get into the seat. I remember walking down from that ride just bawling! That having been said, we've been to Disneyworld several times, and there isn't one thing that I tried to ride that I couldn't. They are much more conscious of larger people than the smaller parks. ALso, I had an awesome time after the first few days, because I wasn't worried at every ride that we came to and was able to have a stress-free vacation with my family. Good luck to ya!

I think it all depends on the amusement park. When I was at Disneyworld I was about six weeks postop (about 20 lbs down from 294 at the time) and I could fit on the rides no problem. When I went to Michigan Adventure a few days ago some rides I could fit no problem and some I could barely fit in, and Im about 80 lbs down now. I did ride one of their bigger roller coasters while I was there and I am currently a little over 4 months postop from an open RNY, and I had no problems at all. You should probably check with your doc just to be sure, but you will probably be fine. Have fun!

I just got back from an amusement park and I am 5'11" and 294lbs. I fit on all the rides and only one ride was really tight. I think you will be fine. (By the way I am still pre-op and I can't wait to go back a year from now after my surgery that is for June 27th 2003).

You should always ask your surgeon to be sure, however if it was me, I would'nt chance riding in those wilder rides at four months post op! Shoot at that time I still could'nt stand the smell of coffe or the tastes/smells of many foods! So I know I was'nt healed inside! I have'nt been on any rides in since around 1986, but some of them were pretty wild "then". I can not imagine what they are like now! Some can put alot of stress on you. Once you are on, you are on for the duration. It's TS if it is hurting you. Is it really worth the risk? Your body is still healing. Do you want to subject it to G forces from some of those rides? It's your body and your choice. Guess I would wait until at least 8 months after surgery. But then, I've had complications from other surgeries, and I know what can happen when you THINK you are well, so I'm alittle more careful than the average Joe Smoe. I know it's nice to enjoy rides, but keep in mind, just because you feel great does'nt mean your body is'nt still healing INSIDE. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm so jealous (but I'm still pre-op, so I'll be joining you soon, smile). Believe it or not, that was one of the biggest things I'm looking forward to after I lose weight. I'm one of those people who ride anything, and some of the rollercoasters I can't ride because they are so tight. In addition to a big belly, I have diastasis recti (you know, where the abdominal rectus muscles get lax), so the ride doesn't quite fit me right. I also wonder if after I lose the weight, will my stomach be small enough for me to ride or am I condemned until after I have a tummy tuck. I wish you the best of fun and ride everything and enjoy :).
