Im no doctor and im pre-op but are you diabetic? just seems like when you drank stuff that a diabetic would have to regain normalcy, it helped. Just my two cents... Good luck and ill be thinking about you. -Kym

I was going to say the exact same thing - sounds like a potential diabetes issue. I have diabetes and the "spell" you described sounds like a critically-low sugar level.

It could be diabetes like the other posters suggested or even Hypoglocemia (sp) My mother suffers with Hypoglocemia (sp) which is when your blood sugars drop to low and when that happens she has to drink OJ or eat a piece of peppermint and she starts to feel better, but I think you should at least call your PCP and talk to the nurse unless your Dr.'s appointment is next week or something.

Yep, same for me when its dumping symptoms. I hate the "disorientation" the worst. It sounds like dumping in that you're reacting within an hour after eating and it goes away in about 1/2 hr. But I would get labs checked to be on the safe side. Good Luck!

I'm also thinking hypoglycemia. I have just been diagnosed with it, although I've pretty much figured I'd had it from my research on the web for a year now (I'm almost 2 years post). My "spells" sound a lot like yours. My primary told me just to "cut back" on carbs. I *was* kinda going nutso with them, however a lg piece of fruit or small serving of lf frozen yogurt can do it to me if I'm especially active or stressed. I'd check with your dr. before coming to any conclusions though. I've been somewhat following the advice around the glycemic index that I've come acrossed on the internet/book store. I actually can go without an episode if I follow the primary premise of that school of though. Best wishes to you. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -150

I'm a Type 1 diabetic and the symptoms you describe sound just like me when I'm having low blood sugar. Getting something to drink with sugar (natural fructose or otherwise) is what I've always been told to do. (Liquid allows the glucose to make it into your bloodstream faster.) Definately call your doctor. This can be a dangerous condition, causing blackouts. It can be controlled also. Good luck!

It sounds to me you are taking in too much sugar. I don't know if you had the rox en Y but i did and I too have some of those same symptoms. Just watch the sugars. I get these even when eating a sugar free protien bar with artificial sugar sometimes. Just check with you Dr. to be sure. Good Luck

Sounds like reactive hypoglycemia. Mine is triggered by all the stuff you said but usually ends in extreme hunger and lasts about 10 minutes until I go eat something like PB crackers. Get your bloodwork checked to see your sugar and all other levels are ok. Good luck and God Bless!

I agree with the previous poster. Get your bloodwork checked TODAY. Have your doc run a Hemeglobin A1C. That will tell him if it is your sugar levels. Just keep juice within easy reach until you see your doc, okay! :~)

I have nothing new to add. Just want to echo what everyone else has said. Get to the doctor soon - don't wait for your next scheduled appointment. I am almost 3 years post op and have these spells about 3 or 4 times a year. I actually had one last night. I stumbled to the kitchen and grabbed a spoon and ate chocolate ice cream right out of the carton. 6 or 8 bites (still standing at the fridge with the freezer door open) and I was o.k. It's scary. Like someone said - keep the juice handy. After last night I will be keeping a little plastic bottle of honey in my nightstand. It usually hits me when I'm sleeping - strange, huh? Get to the doc, ok? Best wishes.

Lori: We had this discussion in our support group. It was clearly in the hyperglocemic catagory. We were told to always carry in our purses what the EMT's are now carring in the ambulances.. That is a tube of white frosting...Not the gel kind. When you have an episode you are to put a finger full under your tongue. Proven to work faster than juice...It has saved lives already.. Just my input...
