Question:
Connection between OrthoTricylen and Slow Wt. Loss?

I am 8 weeks post op. The first three weeks I lost 24 lbs. and in the subsequent 5 weeks, I've only lost 2 lbs. per week. At the 3 week point, I started OrthoTricyclen. Is it possible that this form of birth control is slowing my weight loss this much or am I just at a plateau? I'm eating protein first and little else, 60 oz. of water or more, and 1 hour of power walking 4-5 days a week. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on July 3, 2003)

I have been on orthotricylean since before my surgery. I have not really noticed that slow of weight loss. I am 9 months postop, down 114.5 pounds with 90 more to go.

What you are experiencing is what is called a "PLATEAU". I will be one year post op 7/10/03 I have been on Ortho-Tri since 10/2002 my loss to date 122lbs only 8 pounds away from my goal..

Are you eating enough protein and drinking enough water? You are exercising an awful lot for so early on and you may need more of both. If you do not eat enough your body will hang onto all of what it has for dear life. The word plateau is used way too often. You are not on a plateau if you continue to lose weight each week no matter how slow you think it might be. How many calories are you eating? If that exercise is putting you in a deficit situation you may actually need to eat more to lose more. Good Luck!

Hi Paula - Hormonal birth control (pills, patches, shots) can impact your weight loss. If this concerns you, you may want to check with your doctor about non-hormonal birth control alternatives. After gaining quite a bit of weight after starting the pill pre-op, I decided to use the diaphragm for my birth control post-op. It might be worth switching for a time to see if it makes a difference for you.
