Question:
Suggestions for Making Healthy Iced Coffee

I gave up my morning coffee after surgery 5/23/03 because it just didn't taste good. But the one thing I have been craving lately is the iced coffee I used to make for myself every afternoon pre-op. It just consisted of 3 parts coffee to 1 part Coffeemate French Vanilla creamer (yes I know ... very fattening!), plus ice. I would like to start having this afternoon treat again but could use some suggestions. Does Coffeemate have too much sugar? Do the FF varieties make a difference? I like LOTS of cream with my coffee - is half n half a good choice or should I use FF milk? I appreciate your yummy suggestions!    — MomBear2Cubs (posted on August 11, 2003)

Hello, fellow coffee enthusiast! LOL I also love coffee. I have a couple of coffee drinks I make that are not too bad for you. In the morning I have strong coffee mixed with one cube of demerara sugar (4 g), a heaping tablespoon of nonfat dry milk, and about 1 oz of half & half. It is very creamy and rich.<p>Sometimes in the afternoon I have strong coffee mixed with a Rich Dark Chocolate AdvantEdge protein drink (ready-to-drink in the silver box) over ice. It tastes like a mocha drink and I don't even feel like it is a "protein drink."<p>If I am going to Starbucks, I order either a double tall, non-fat, with-whipped latte OR a double tall, non-fat, sugar-free vanilla latte. They are both good hot or iced.

I blend 1 cup cold brewed coffee, 1 cup water, 3-4 ice cubes, 1 cup skim milk, 2TBS protein powder and a little SF/FF vanilla or white chocalate pudding powder (experiment to find the right amt for you). Blend well and you have something similar to a Coolatta. It has protein and water plus the calcium from the milk, some carbs, but for me the benefits outweigh them. In my opinion Coffee mate does have too many carbs and the fat free varieties have more. I like a little half and half in my cofee, but there's too much fat for me to use it in this drink. Hope you like it.

I like to use the Sugar free syrups (vanilla, hazelnut, etc.) mixed with coffee and a little skim milk or non-dairy fat free creamer. You can order the syrups from vitalady.com and I also found the vanilla at wal-mart yesterday on the coffee isle.

I get sugar free syrups at Cost Plus World Market.. or sometimes the grocery store.. there are a few place, but Cost Plus has the most. I save some coffee from the morning brew and put it in the fridge.. then I make something with SF vanilla syrup, skim milk (1/2 cup) and a splash of fat free half and half.. lots of ice.. I love it.. just finished some.

hiya~ i too love iced coffee. please drink decaf as much as possible, the caffeine is not good for your stomach and it leaches calcium from your bones. i start the day: 1/3 cup supplement direct natural flavor whey protein powder, cooled coffee (stir), add edensoy extra natural flavor soy milk, sugar free vanilla torani syrup and splash of heavy whipping cream (not whip cream, but the heavy whipping cream - got that from the atkins diet lol) that makes it nice & creamy. once mixed you can add ice. if i go to starbucks i get iced decaf sugar free vanilla latte with soy milk and i add a splash of half & half. kate

I do it cheap and easy. In the morning, I take a 24 oz. sports bottle and put in a heaping tsp. of Folgers decaf instant coffee and 4 sweet and lows. I then fill it with water (from our water cooler) until there is just enough room for skim milk to lighten itthe way I like it. I take it in the car with me and drink it on my way to work. That's 3 cups down and done. I make another bottle up (coffee kept in my closet)and try to finish it before lunch. I drink yet another 3 cups of water or lemonade between lunch and the trip home. I know the skim milk is not the greatest but it is ok with the instant, not bitter at all. Good luck!

I am stubborn and refuse to give up my last guilty pleasure....Dunkin Donuts with 4 sweet and lows and CREAM (light no less!) It hasn't hurt my weight loss and I guess there must be some calcium in the cream. I really do not think it tastes the same with anything but half and half or cream, and my philosophy about this entire journey is there are no "bad" foods, everything in moderation!! (Unless its a food that makes me dump, then its "bad" in my book.

I add General Foods Internatioal Coffee SF Decaf Suisse Mocha or Vanilla to my protein shakes. I was just trying different things to help with the taste of the shakes and this is my favorite.
