Question:
Incontinence increased after surgery. I have had a couple of close calls and even

two accidents in the past two weeks. I have had to pee and could not hold it a second longer. What is going on? This is so weird and disturbing. I am calling my doctor in the morning but just wanted to know if anyone else had a similar experience or advice. I am embarrassed and worried.    — Ann B. (posted on August 18, 2003)

Hi, Ihad this problem before WLS. Every time I felt a sneeze or cough coming, I would cross my legs and hope I stayed dry :). Since surgery, however, this problem has disappeared for me. I assumed it was because there was nothing in the lower part of my transected stomach pushing on my bladder. My WLS surgeon also removed some adhesions from my 2 c-sections and lap gallbladder removal so I don't know if that could have made a difference too. I didn't check to see how far post-op you are, but hopefully it will improve as time goes on. Good Luck

You might have a urinary tract infection. Good idea to let your doc know. I have sort of the same thing going on, and I told my PCP about it. I said I can't tell for sure because I drink so much water. (No burning, but also was some frequency and urgency.) Had a routine urinalysis and culture and sensitivity done and waiting to hear the results today.

I found almost the same problem after surgery. I discussed this with a WLS friend of mine who also experienced some of the same thing. What I found was that I had a different 'sensation' that I wasn't familiar with. I didn't get the same urge so to speak for when I needed to go, so often I didn't know that I should go. Then you wind up with problems. Often when I finally 'felt' that I needed to go, it was too late. So, I countered by putting myself on a regular bathroom schedule until the sensation/urge got back to normal. This problem worked itself out and my surgeon and Dr. never had an answer for me about why it happens.
