Question:
When can I play high impact volleyball post op?
Hi everyone! I noticed that someone posted a volleyball question previously in the archives. But it looked like that person played recreationally. I play pretty upper level ball which means diving on hardwood floors(typically landing on my stomach or side), alot of twisting, reaching, etc while jumping, and basically alot of high impact exercise. When will I be able to play safely post op if at all? Thanks! Kate — Kate U. (posted on September 28, 2003)

Sounds like a question for your surgeon for sure! If he okays this at all,
it would have to be at least 2-3 months after surgery. Maybe you'd have to
wear a special padding over your torso?

Kate, i read your question about vball, so, i am posting in the Q&A and
also replying to you persoanlly just in case you don't see it. I played
Varsity Vball in highschool, got a partial scholarship for college and play
in NYC's Urban Prof Vball league, they have 300+ teams, I have been
plyaing for the last 7 yrs, i am now 32. I had Open RNY on 8-15-2003 and I
was 305 lbs. I started playing again in January, when I was 3-4 most
post-op. I had to wait so long b/c my incision burst open 6 days post-op
and leaked for 3 mos. Even when I was a fat 305 lbs, I dove all over the
place and spent alot of time on the hardwood. I will tell you, i was scared
the first time I dove this past winter. I was so worried I would rumble up
everyhting inside. I felt nothing but the hardwood and girl, it felt
great. It also felt so good to be playing at 120lbs lighter. You will be
fine, i would ask your dtr specifically how long to wait, but, I persoanlly
would wait until you get all your strength back and don't overdo it at
first, I would wait about 2-3 mos. Good Luck, email me if you need to .
