Question:
Has anyone else noticed a difference in their sense of balance?

I feel sometimes that my balance is off a little. Not really bad, but, sometimes I seem to stumble a little more than I use to, and even walk into door frames slightly. ( it's not an everyday or all day kind of thing) Could it be that my center of gravity is different, and my body is taking time to get use to it? Pre op I was 282, had RNY Lap on 5/15/03, down 83lbs- 199lbs. ( first time under 200 in about 20 yrs. ) thank you :-)    — KellyJeanB (posted on October 18, 2003)

I noticed this at about 100lbs loss. You body is losing so fast it has a hard time adjusting to the weight change just like you do....BUT....I did have low blood sugar problems too so check with your doc just to make sure.

I have experienced this too. My legs feel like they are not co-ordinated sometimes. When I go for a walk, I like to walk with someone just in case I tip over or something LOL. I know it is not LBS or the middle ear thing. It is simply from not hauling around so much weight. This started for me when I was down 30 lbs. It still happens now at -54 lbs. I assume it will continue until long past goal. So far I haven't actually fallen. One foot in front of the other.....

I thought it was just me. I have had a problem with positional vertigo for quite a while. But it's only been in the past few months that I have noticed that sometimes I seem to slightly veer to one side or the other when I am walking. I assume it will go away after a while. I'm scheduled for lab work next week anyway. I guess I'll mention it to my dr when I go for the results since other people have the same problem, it might be related to the surgery.

It is possible that this is not related to wls at all. The symptoms you mention also could be a rotated pelvis. I just went through that and never connected the different things happening like walking into walls especially going down a hallway, or stumbling when there was nothing in my way. Not to get too graphic but another symptom had to do with occasional bladder leakage. All of it caused by the rotated pelvis. It might be worth looking into with your dr.

I noticed this too. I am a little over 6 months out and down 83 lbs. Last week I noticed some vertigo while flying in an airplane. It was weird - something I had never experienced before. I don't ever really feel like my legs are stumbling - mine is more vertigo where my head kind of spins. I'm going in for blood work next week so will mention to my PCP.

I am glad to see someone else has this problem also. I feel I cannot walk a straight line.. Also sometimes feel dizzy in getting in and out of bed.. I have lost 13o..so think it is because my body is used to more weight. I have done bloodwork and it is fine. Thanks..now I know it has to do with weight losss!

YES! After I lost the first 50 pounds, I suddenly found myself stumbling all over the place. I definitely think it was mostly because my center of gravity and ways of shifting my weight changed! At one point, I also realized that my feet were slightly smaller and my shoes were too loose. As a result, I was slipping around in my shoes. One week I actually fell down twice! [Had minor injuries, bumps, bruises, both times]. My husband and I joked about it a lot.... he kept asking how I was getting drunk when I couldn't eat sugar! Anyway, it eventually passed as I got used to my new body.

I received advice when I was still preop that for the first 6 months to a year when you lose the majority of your weight, to stay off of bikes (not the stationary ones), not to walk on things that required much balance (high heels, curbs, etc.) and to avoid things that required balance - ladders and such. Guess the shift in our weight can really mess with our balance. When I was about 5 months out I stumbled in the kitchen and landed my hand on a hot burner and ended up in the ER. I'm still careful today since I'm still not used to my body lol
