Question:
Has anyone heard that Carnie Wilson is regaining?

I felt like I was slapped in the face last night. I have one friend who has been following my progress, but was not completely supportive of my decision to have RNY surgery over 6 months ago. When I speak with her, I often do not discuss my progress for fear of being "shot down" by a comment on how so-and-so had the surgery and so-and-so is eating like before and so-and-so is regaining, etc. Well, she told me last night that she watches/watched Carnie Wilson on The View and she is gaining weight again. Is this true? I don't watch daytime TV and the last I saw of Carnie was several months ago when they profiled her on some news show, showing her exercise regiment. I'm scared and not afraid to say I am. I read both of Carnie's books and felt like I could totally relate to her. Has anyone noticed her regaining weight? And if so, has she discussed why? What she's doing differently? What she's falling back on? Any answers would be greatly appreciated!!    — Amy A. (posted on November 3, 2003)

Carnie was on The View for a couple of days during the last month. (she is trying out for one of the "host" spots). I thought she looked great!!! I just went to Spotlight Health and Carnie posts a monthly newsletter. She states that she has gained 10 lbs but is working hard to get it back off. Please take all those negative comments for what they're worth. Taking several things into consideration...is your friend who makes these comments heavy? Has she always been thinner and you were always the "fat" friend? You have reclaimed your life and good for you for doing so! Never let anyone make you feel like a lesser person for doing so. Our TRUE friends are the ones that love us no matter what. I am preop and the thought of going through all of this and regaining is a scary one that crosses all our minds at some point or another. I am entering into my journey being as real as I possibly can about it. I'm sure my weight will fluctuate some over time, however there is a huge difference between 10 pounds and 300. Remember the good things you are doing for yourself, embrace your new lifestyle and follow your basic food rules. You will be great!

Sorry, this may seem like a tough response but the surgery needs to be kept in perspective - you CAN gain weight after this surgery if you don't eat correctly and/or you don't excersize. This website has people talking about gaining weight 2 years after surgery at least once a month. Their numbers seem very low however compared to the number of people who have had the surgery. If you read the NIH study on RNY, you will find that the members of the study who did gain weight 2 or more years after surgery, only gained 5% or less of their total loss. While the pouch feels like a miracle, we need to remember that it is only a tool. As for Carnie, she had a tummy tuck etc not that long ago so I think she looks thinner. Perhaps it's her latest hair color which seems to change every few months. If you go to her website, you can ask her if she's gaining and she will respond. My best wishes - 4/03 283/200/175

Hi Amy- Maybe it's time to set some limits with your friend...."Mary (or whatever her name is), we have been friends for _____ years and I care about you a great deal. I don't need your negativity, so if you can't be supportive about my WLS then the subject is closed." I haven't seen Carnie Wilson for a few months, so I don't know if she's gained any weight back. But I would tell your friend that it's not about being a "supermodel". If Carnie Wilson gained some weight back, that's too bad, but I'm sure she's happier and healthier than the 300-ish pounds she used to weigh. Good Luck to you :o) Mea

Hi! I can't answer your question about Carnie, but I will tell you that I have a friend who sounds just like yours. Yes, she has always been the "cute, petite" one, and the first time she had seen me since the week of my surgery I had lost 60 lbs. She said, yes, she could tell I'd lost a little weight - but that she thought the dress I was wearing was slenderizing. I think sometimes the people who have known us all along somehow feel threatened by the changes we undergo. Just goes to show who the real insecure people are.

I got this on one of the lists I am on regarding people being supportive" If you can't walk beside me - get out of my way. I love it!!

Just because Carnie Wilson is (or isn't) gaining weight doesn't mean you will.

This is why I always cringe when people here say "XXX pounds gone forever". It is NOT gone forever and it can come back! Everyone here in my small town who has had wls gained, most, all, or more of their weight back. NO ONE has been succesful! NOT A ONE. I went into WLS knowing full well that it was NOT the answer for "long term weight loss" UNLESS I WAS DILIGENT TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. That is the key. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE to make sure we don't gain it back. I weigh almost everyday to keep track so I don't start gaining. Unfortunatly NONE of us are immune to the possibility of gainning it back.

Not to sound harsh, but I saw a recent photo of her in the Enquirer and her caboose looked pretty big - I'd venture to say she's more like 20-30lbs up...and all I can say is "There if for the grace of God go I..." It's scary to think we can gain even a lb back (esp. if it's taken as long as it might have if we were "normies") but I figure if I keep up my exercise regime and don't go too hog wild, I should be okay. We'll see how the holiday season goes. Anybody else stressed about THAT?
