Question:
I haven't been taking my Calcium pills every day like I should...

Because the things are HORSE PILLS!! I got two different kinds from two different stores, Citracal and another kind, and the pills are HUGE!! I cut them up and I STILL gag on them. I do take them, but I know I miss more days than I should. Does anyone know of some other kind that are smaller? I don't care if I have to take more than the others as long as they're smaller!    — mars.renee (posted on November 11, 2003)

I take Caltrate 600 Plus with Vitamin D, twice a day. They are chewable and taste really good.

Hello, vitalady ( www.vitalady.com ) sells a great powdered calcium with vitamin D called UpCal or something like that. It's tasteless and odorless and can be mixed with food and drinks.

Although Tums are calcium, they are calcium carbonate not calcium citrate. Carbonate is not absorbed well by post ops. Most surtgeons and nutritionists will require their post ops to take some form of calcium citrate. Did you ever consider liquid calcium citrate?? It's not all that bad, and comes in several flavors.

Here's what I do..... I take 2 of the "horse" pills and let them melt in just enough water to cover them. Then I pour my protein drink in the glass and mix well. You need to keep mixing it as the calcium is heavy and continually sinks to the bottom. I have also seen liquid calcium.... Just make sure you're buying CALCIUM CITRATE :) Good luck :) Tracy

I've used the Upcal from vitalady and she also has some calcium capsule things. You have to take three per day, but they're not giant horse pills. It all works for me. :)

Marcie, I know several people who use a chewable calcium citrate - and think it's wonderful. Here's a link where it can be purchased: https://www2.rgarden.net/cgi-bin/orderform.pl?refid=Store&[email protected] I haven't tried it personally - I use the calcium citrate from Vitalady, but have thought seriously about getting some - they say they taste like sweet tarts - and I love those! Blessings, dina

Viactiv, Tums and Caltrate are all calcium carbonate - which is not the form of calcium supplement that we should be taking. We should be talking calcium citrate...JR

This is definitely going against the mainstream. I had a bone density test done - according to it, my bones will withstand anything short of an atomic attack. For now, I am drinking Lactaid milk with carnation instant breakfast every morning and taking two vitamins with calcium added each day. I am NOT taking any other calcium supplement. The nutrionist heard my complaints about finding suitable calcium and we're taking a wait and see approach and basing my need for calcium on the blood work I have done every 6 months. Could be that I don't need additional calcium supplementation. Having said all of this - please don't make the decision to not take calcium unless you get the blessing of your medical team.

I use the Twinlab Calcium Citrate wafers (you can get them online a bunch of places--put Twinlab Calcium Citrate into any search engine and it will return gobs of retailers, or go to twinlab.com). You chew them, and they taste kind of like SweetTart candy. You chew two of them three times a day. Very easy, portable, and relatively tasty, with no nasty chalkiness.

I take the Bariatric Advantage calcium, they come in mint and chocolate. I get them from either bariatricadvantage.com or wlssupplies.com depending if I need to order other stuff or not.

There's also liquid calcium citrate from www.vitaminworld.com that I just ordered. Two tablespoons per day does the trick for 1000mg. It is sold in a number of flavors, though I've heard that blueberry is most people's favorite.

BariatricAdvantage.com chocolate and mint lozenges that you suck on or chew. They're pretty good.

You can chew the Citracal ones you already have. They have zero taste. You get a grittness in your mouth but just wash it out with some water and go on. There really is no excuse not to take them as there are options out there. <p>For me personally I do not care to wait till a calcium deficiency shows up in my bloodwork. This is a cheap easy solution to protect my bones long term. Once you have bone loss it is likely gone and then it becomes a problem to stop it and maintain. Not worth it to me. I also had a Dexascan at 6 months PO which looks totally normal and that's how I intend to keep it by taking the supplements I was told we needed. The regular coated Citracal's without vitamin D are much smaller and you should be able to swallow fairly easy. The one with the D are better but getting some in is better than none. Just set your mind that you are going to make this work and don't regret it later.
