I'm 4 wks. post-op. I lost an initial 10 lbs. Stopped for a week, lost 4, stopped for a week, lost 5. I think this is the way it goes - lose, stop, lose, stop. People tell me to throw away the scale, but I know I can't do that! One post I read said 4-5 lbs. a week is average - so if you look at it like that, you're right on schedule. Try not to worry - some of us are slow losers, and you've made a great start. Mary R.

You are doing fine! We all lose a bit differently based on our own physiology. I know it's hard to stay off the scale (can't do it myself) but just try to be patient, follow the rules and you will be successful. I'm a fairly slow loser compared to some but now at 3 months, I'm down 43 pounds and I'm considered a lightweight so I think that's pretty good. Your body will adjust and you will begin to see your weight loss pattern after a few weeks. Keep the faith....it will work for you.

I have heard about many post-ops, myself included that did not lose anything between 2 and 4 weeks postop. It was darn annoying but it did start up again. I lost 18 pounds at my 2 week checkup. Do not worry, it will start up again. Good luck! Theresa OpenRNY 7/15/03 235/168/140?135

I was told it was normal for women not to lose any weight about every 3 weeks, it does not matter if you are menapausal or of child bearing age. Has to do with hormones....

I think I am a slow loser also. Today is 5 weeks post-op and my total weight loss is 19 pounds. It went like this: Week 1--10 pounds, week 2--3 pounds, week 3--1 pound, week 4--5 pounds, week 5--0 pounds. It was very discouraging to not have lost anything week 5. I just have to assume it will keep coming off, how could it not?

This happened to me. I didn't lose from week 3-6. But I am 6 months post op and -90 so it's fine.

Just wanted to let you know that its too early to start thinking its not working. I too had no loss around week 3 or 4 but I am now almost 9 months out and from 269 to 153. Give it time and follow the rules, you will get there! Good luck!

I will be seven weeks on Wednesday and I didn't lose anything my fourth or sixth week but I have lost 53 pounds so far. Don't worry, drink your water, eat protein and exercise, the pounds WILL come off.

The same thing has been happening to me. I lost 31 pounds in the first 3 weeks. On week 4 I started pureed foods and gained about 2 pounds the first 2 days. Then lost that, then lost a pound, then gained it back today. I'm in my fifth week. I think our bodies need time to adjust. I haven't done it yet, but most people suggest to take your measurements. You are probably losing inches, even if you are not losing pounds. I'm glad you posted this question since I've been a little concerned this week too. I figured it was probably PMS.

Hi Susan, I am 3 weeks post-op too and have the same problem. I lost 17lbs the first week and haven't moved the scale since. I was worried too but I just read an article in the recent ObesityHelp magazine from a surgeon that said you will experience your first plateau sometime in the first 5 weeks post-op. He said this is your body's way of adjusting to the surgery and you are probably still losing inches even though the scale isn't moving. The reason you lose inches even though no weight is lost is because your body is not only burning fat at this stage but lean muscle mass as well. He states that we will experience many plateaus as our body adjusts to it's new tummy, foods and eating patterns. I've even started exercising on a bike and using free weights for cardiovascular to try to break the plateau and after a week only lost a pound even though I burned more calories than I ate. At first I thought I was doing something wrong because I plateaued when I started drinking the protien shakes which have quite a few calories in them. My surgeon said that in the first month you will come close to averaging a loss of a pound a day irregardless of whether or not it comes off every day or not. Don't worry about it. I think my problem is that I weigh myself way too often to even notice when the needle moves anymore. Call me anxious!
