Question:
This can't be a plateau, could it?

I had open RNY on 1/30 and through the first month i lost almost 40 pounds, but since then I haven't lost anything? What is the deal with that? I have just begun exercising and i get about 60 oz of water in everyday and that is a struggle. My meals are normally as follows about 3 oz of chili with beans in the AM, low fat with a bit of low fat cheese on top for some more protein, a string cheese about 3 hours later, a lean cuisine for lunch, just the meat about 3 ozs., and then dinner is usually some meat of some kind. i also drink probably 16 - 20 ozs of lite cranberry juice that couldn't cause this stall, could it? Also this all started when i went back on the birth control pill at one month out and then i went off it last week, could it just be getting used to the hormones i screwed up by going back on the pill and then back off so quick, because of course now i have my period again? Anyway, just looking for some ideas or encouragement. One other thing, despite no weight loss i do feel as if my body is getting smaller - how does that make any sense? Yes, its a plateau and its normal at this stage. You will have MANY of them so don't panic! Your body is playing 'catch up'. Your doing great! Oh, and when your on a plateau, the inches literally drop off of you so you ARE getting smaller even though the scale isn't moving. Take your measurements once a month. It will keep you going when the scale doesn't move.

Yeah, its normal. Fortunately everyone at my support group warned me that about a month out I'd hit a plateau. It'll pass.

I also hit a plateau at a month out (Surgery was 2/11). After 2 weeks at the same weight (or up and down by a pound & 1/2) I finally lost a couple of pounds this week. Just keep a positive attitude!

I had open RNY on 1/27/04 and I, too, lost 40 lbs. rather quickly and I'm experiencing the same thing you are - actually it looked like I gained a couple lbs. but then they finally went away but I have stayed the same for almost a week even though I'm eating next to nothing. I'm not doing as well as you getting in my water and protein. I was wondering if that might be the problem. Glad to know I'm not the only one who hit a plateau at this same stage. I guess we will just have to trust that things will pick up when our body readjusts. Good luck to you.

It's kind of early for a plateau, but 40 pounds in a month is a LOT, so I think it's quite possible your body is trying to hang onto the calories right now! And it's definitely possible to get smaller even though your not losing weight, particularly if you've been exercising a lot. A pound of muscle is smaller than a pound of fat. I don't think you're eating too much, though I'm not sure how much sugar is in that cranberry juice. You might want to try substituting something else for that and see if it makes a difference OR upping your calories. It sounds backwards but often that works for a plateau, your body relaxes and doesn't feel the need to hang on to the calories! Try not to worry about it, you'll do fine. Take your measurements as well as weighing to see the difference.
