Question:
2 weeks post op and plateau

Hi, I am not complaining whatsoever. I had a very good outcome from my surgery, no dumping or sickness (yet), and pain only for a couple of days. My question is, Is it normal to hit a plateau 2 weeks post op. I had a loss of 19 pounds by day 11 post op, but since haven't loss any. I know 19 pounds in 15 days is still wonderful but I just wondered if this is normal? I'm sure all post ops go through the phase of feeling like "Am I going to be the person this surgery doesn't work for?" But I am following my surgeons and nutritionists guidelines to a T. Once again don't get me wrong I am very grateful for this surgery. Just wondering if I fall in the normal category. I started with about 113 pounds to lose. Thanks for all of your help.    — mvh22 (posted on November 5, 2004)

Congratulations on your surgery! You made it to the other side! Now, about that plateau. I hit my first plateau about 3 weeks after surgery, and it lasted nearly a month. Then I lost 14 pounds in 9 days! Then a couple of weeks later I hit another plateau, which lasted about 3 weeks, but then I again dropped a bunch of weight at one time. Many times I too have felt like I am going to be one of the few that the surgery does not work for! LOL! But you have to remember that everyone will lose the weight in a different way, because our bodies are different. And considering you have 113 pounds to lose, you are doing incredibly well! You have already lost about 1/6 of all your excess weight, and after only 2 weeks. If it continued at that pace, you would lose all your weight in about 3 months! And that would not be healthy or normal. A plateau is natural after your body has suddenly dropped a bunch of weight. I started with 200 pounds to lose, and any plateau immediately turns me into a drama queen. LOL. But you will do well if you continue to follow the doctor's and nutritionist's guidelines. Also, as soon as you can, start exercising every day, (especially walking), drink lots of fluids, and train yourself to eat more proteins and go easy on the carbs. That always helps me to get past a plateau. Oh, one more thing: remember that your monthly cycle can also temporarily interfere with your weight loss--you may even gain a few pounds. But don't worry, it's just water retention and it will pass. Take care.

I happens to most everyone at some time or other. I have hit many short little plateaus. But my surgeon explained it like this. You lose like stair steps. You go along at the same weight for a bit and then you drop....along...drop. That is very normal. Your body has to constantly readjust. You're doing great!

Hey there everyone! I just wanted to offer a few words of encouragement for those of you that are experiencing a plateau Each month, I am on a plateau for about 3 weeks. Then, I lose SEVERAL pounds in one week before going back on a plateau again. For example: This month I was stuck at 181 for soooooo long. But in less than a week, I have already lost 8 pounds (173). Now that I have figured out my body's system, I believe it will be much easier for me to deal with. To those of you having similar problems, I suggest you figure out your body's system; it makes thing so much easier to deal with. My body loses weight right before my monthly flow. Then, it gains about 5 pounds back during the flow. Next, it loses those 5 pounds it gained about a week after my flow is over. Finally, it stays on a plateau until right before the next flow. What is your body's system of losing? Curious Diva Mickey

I am 6 weeks out and am at a standstill as well. I posted the same question at another site. The best answer I received was to weigh yourself once a month and to find something else to do with your time. IT WILL HAPPEN!!!
