Question:
I know we cannot absorb more than 25-30 grams of protein at a time,

but how long do we need to wait in between? If I have a protein shake at 10:30am, will I still absorb my protein from lunch at noon?    — Gia I. (posted on September 15, 2005)

There is no research that proves that we only absorb 25-30 grams of protein at a time. If you know of something, please pass it on. Somehow this is what the people here at OH seem to think. Although this is not a proven fact, there are also no studies as to how much we can absorb at one time. If anyone knows of some research to prove this, please post it.

We usually figure 2 hrs between shakes, but who knows for sure and who knows for YOU? As to the 30g rule, it is the mfrs who recommend that formula. If they wanted to sell more protein, they wouldn't put any limit on it. The study that was done was at Penn State in the late 80's. Nope, don't have a copy. Only know that I challenged this rule many times over the last 10 years, but the "seasoned" mfrs all stand by it, even today.

This is a question I have as well, so I asked my nutritionist about it. She is over hundreds and hundreds of Bariatric patients yearly at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center in VA. Here is what she had to say- I have also had a difficult time finding any research that proves the 25-30 grams at a time rule. I have found statements that say most of the protein we eat is absorbed but doesn't necessarily apply to post op gastric bypass patients. Considering that balance, moderation and meals that contain protein are more satisfying, provides for better energy levels and that you need 60-80 grams of protein per day if you spread this out over your meals and snacks you'll feel better, be able to have moderate amount of carbs at meals without going over (making you sleepy) it makes good nutritional sense to do this. Would you absorb 80 grams of protein if you had it all at once? Probably, but you still wouldn't get the overall outcomes you are looking for. -hope this helps! ~christi in Virginia Beach

I don't know where the research is that backs up the 30gms but from personal experience I can tell you that a protein shake or bar containing 40 grams of protein gives me bad intestional cramps and diarreha within a few hours. But a shake at 10:30 and then protein at lunch should not be a problem. As a BPD patient I have to get in 100 gms which means 20 - 30 6x a day.
