Question:
Have most of you went through a plateau period?

I lost 50lbs since 11-4-99 and then stopped for the last two months and either stayed the same weight or else gained a couple then lost them ...back and forth? It is really scaring me.Is this normal? Help!    — Nicole D. (posted on March 27, 2000)

Yes, Nicole we all have experienced them.. No fun at all and somewhat depressing.. Trust me this will pass and suddenly too.. One week you will bounce two pounds back and forth, day to day.. Then all at once zap you drop that 2 plus an additional 3... My suggestion is: <p> Don't weight daily, drink lots of water between meals (at least a quart) add 1/2 mile to your walking daily. Stay away from carbs as much as possible, and one full week, no breads (3 crackers a day. ok) no potatoes. Make sure you're getting all your protein in.. Then weight at the end of the week (no peeking wait 7 days to weigh yourself)...Then let me know how you did..

I had my surgery Oct 4th and have lost almost over 88 lbs...I too have been going through a plateau since the beginning of February. In fact, I have been noticing a lot of people experiencing a long plateau no matter where they are in this WLS jouney. So I have been thinking it might have something do to outside forces, like the change of the season, the fact that it was a warmer winter, or even maybe the distance the moon is from the earth. I have been watching what I eat more so now that I have before. I no long snack and I try to do more fun activitites now to try to loose the weight. Last month I was lucky just to loose 4 lbs, I have talked to others who have not lost any. Hang in there, this too shall pass....and I pray soon

Hey Nicole: I really understand where you are coming from. I am now 6 months post op and have been at 70lbs lost for almost 1-1/2 months. I have not budged. In fact, I feel it is causing me to make worse choices lately out of frustration. Has anyone else run into this? I have never been a good dieter--obviously, so why should now be that different. I think the advice you have received below is great and I am going to give it a try. Let me know if you find a good answer. Good Luck. LAP RNY Proximal 9/22/99 - 70 lbs. lost.

At my 6 mo. surgery anniversary, I had lost 175 pounds, with about 75 lbs to go to my goal. Over the last 5 months I have lost 4 pounds. I work out 5-8 times a week, including strength training. I eat low carb, no sugar, mostly protein 3 meals a day, 64 oz + of water a day, and am losing NOTHING!! I am about ready to give up. What the H*ll is going on. I have never worked so hard than the last 4 months, my cardio and strength have increased greatly (which I am glad of), but the tiny weight loss is frustrating. I can understand not losing weight for a couple weeks to a month, but 5-6 months with little weight loss is maddening. ARGH!!!
